Back in 1956, I had just graduated from New Kensington High School. I landed a good high paying job and I bought a brand new Ford Fairlane convertible with a Police Interceptor engine. Man, I was cool. All us cool guys had flattops with a ducktail haircut, wore our collars turned up, wore pegged pants and listened to Elvis. Back then, we walked with a strut not a shuffle. Our pastime consisted of waxing the cars including the engine, drag racing and cruising the local Big Boy hamburger shop looking for quail (chicks). When somebody says remember the good old days, my mind flashes back to this period of time, I wonder why. I was fulfilling my military obligation during the Cuban crises and after that; I spent five years in night school. I looked up one day and I had a wife and four children, driving a station wagon and building a house. What the hell happened? Just recently, I looked up and it happened again, I have a lovely second wife, ten grand children counting step grand children and soon to be a great grandfather. I now drive a pickup truck so I can haul horseshit for the garden. Oh boy, remember the good old days? ( photo / image / picture from jbest123's Garden )
Sweet ride! My first car was a hand-me-down thru 3 brothers. A '67 Nova... 3 on the column. The gears would jam and the back windshield would plop off sometimes (even when going down the road). It was lemon yellow. Had an 8-track player and AM radio. No A/C. For a senior in high school... I was one cool chick. It was sold for scrap/parts after I graduated. Now my second car... a loaner from my brother "the dragon"... '74 (I think) Capri. That was one fast car. Used to race it against some guys that had souped up engines. Won alot of the times. He took it away from me at my "good brother's" wedding. After that, I sweet talked my daddy into buying me a new car. '77 Ford Pinto. Didn't come with a radio or AC. I couldn't have won a race with it if I tried. But... it got me back and forth to college and my job and took me on my big move to New Mexico. Then I forgot to maintain it and blew up the engine. Sigh... I really liked that Pinto.
Cherylad--I had a Pinto too. It was my first car, I got it second hand. I have photos of me driving away to my 1st apartment, the Pinto loaded down with stuff, and a round dining room table tied to the top!
My first car yellow was a Ford Anglia. I LOVED that car. I bought it fully 3 months before I even had my license! John, it sounds like you were one cool dude! Have you ever heard that country song, I think it's titled "Don't Blink?" It describes exactly what you're talking about.
I had 2 Pintos!!! My very first car was a 73 (I think) wagon and traded it for a 75 run-a-bout. I loved that little car.
