Okay, I need help! Where are the seeds (plesae don't laugh TOO hard!) on a canna...and someone somewhere also said hips from roses...can someone educate me?

Silman, hope you don't mind me sharing your post-I also have a question on canna's. I bought a canna bulb last fall. Should I have put it into the ground last year? Or do I put it in the ground this year? Is it now too late? Can someone help me on what I should do?
All the canna I have ever had are some hardy boogers. Put'em anywhere any time and you will have beauty! I started out with 5 or six last year and now I have goobs...same with my passion flower. I just moved some canna two weeks ago and I have no doubt that they will take off.All of mine are orange with yellow verigation. Beautiful. I am not sure why some are green leaved and some red....don't know much about them..cept that they are invasive! happy day!
Petunia - you have similar weather in Michigan as I have here in Ontario. Plant your Canna's outside after all danger of frost is past and dig them up and bring them inside for the winter. I usually pot some up indoors in about March for a "jump start".
Here in the south, Cannas can withstand what winters we have if they are mulched well in zone 8. We had a pretty bad freeze last January, and most of them survived here.
Thanks for the info. When I lived downstate, I lived in apartment and I used to have canna's flower right up against the wall so I kept them in the ground during the winter and they survived. But here in the north, I'll have to dig them up in the fall and replant them I guess in the spring. Their very pretty flowers.
the rose hips come after the rose has fallen off... i mean the petals,, don't pick that off, let it grow, a ball will start to form an when it gets a really deep red then pick it. usually after the first frost or later, but it will be in winter. some climates its not till after winter when you see the hip. cut in half and you can use the outter shell or the hip part for teas, jams, conserves...ect.. the seeds take out an put in a container then freeze for a few months then plant in spring or winter sow them... you will hopefully have more rose plants then.

( I'm kidding...he hasn't gone over the edge yet...) however the front yard is a flower garden...back yard?...not yet...
I was unaware of how to collect seeds from roses. I just usually start cuttings which is not always successful. I have used rose petals for many edible desserts, especially sorbets. I have tested them myself, and they taste pretty much like they smell......although not as sweet tasting as fragrant. If you have ever used lavender as a culinary herb, it is much the same. There is a flowery flavor.
