From the title of bird seed, one would thing that you put some of it in the ground and birds would sprout up. But no, all I got was some sunfloers, weeds and some other plants that I have no idea what they were. Not a bird one. I don't think they put any bird seed in the bag at all.

And here I was, thinking that the starlings were started from seed. ;)

We've got a new mix of shell-less bird seed here promoted by Bill Oddie. VERY expensive but is said to be lawn friendly although I haven't tried it myself.

I usually mix 50 lbs of black oil sunflower seeds along with 50 lbs of cracked corn. As the birds scratch the corn out of the feeder to get the sunflower seeds the corn drops on the ground for the ground feeding birds like the doves and the Juncos. The feeder hangs on the side of the tree and I just rake the shells up against the tree and use it as mulch.
