We got a foot of snow in the last few days. Last year I had planted a hollyhock which I had grown from seed. It was doing so well. I was so hoping to get blooms this summer. Now I am not sure it will survive after the snow. What do you think? Will it survive? How about the lilies that I had? I hope my babies do survive
I'm certain your plants will be fine, Tina, as long as they're supposed to take your zone. We've got plenty of lilies outside, and a few hollyhocks. The snow acts as insulation for your plants, so even if the temps are low, they'll be fine underneath the snow cover. We loose plants every winter, but that's either due to the mild and wet winters or the severe frost without any snow.
Tina, I'm sure your hollyhocks will be fine. Almost every hollyhock available is hardy to zone 3. Many are even hardy in zone 2. So a little snow will make them happy.
I agree totally with what Droopy says. In fact, if they don't make it, I shall be surprized. Better a blanket of snow than the searing sub-zero winds. If you still feel worried after the snow melts, you can always add some mulch around the base of the plants that you mentioned. I don't think that it is necessary, but one can put no price on peace of mind. Right?
Thanks so much. It makes me feel so much better now. Sjoerd - I had already mulched them. So, I am ine there. Thanks though On another note, took four cuttings of the geranium plant that I had brought indoors early dec. Keeping my fingers crossed for them.
The snow hasn't slowed my hollyhocks down any! I know what it's like to worry over plants I worry every year over new day lilies and peonies Deanna :-D
