For central Ohio anyway! Saw a wooly bear caterpillar in the yard this morning. He had a little black on both ends and medium brown in the middle. So this should mean some snow at the beginning of winter and the end of winter. And mild in between. I sure hope he is right. I ordered my firewood today. I have about 2 1/2 cord left over from last year and I ordered 2 cord today. This guy that I get my wood from, his dad bought our old farm, so he cuts me a deal. Most people get $150 to $200 a cord, unsplit and unstacked. He charges me $100 a cord. He does a great job at a reasonable price.
That is good that you get a good deal on your firewood. I heat with wood too. I have a stack that needs split leftover from last winter. I hope DS gets at it soon, also a friend is supposed to bring his splitter and come and help out with that chore. The chainsaw we bought is a total piece of junk, and won't keep running for more than a little bit at a time, then DS has to repair it. Next time we will get a STIHL. [I saw in several TV shows where big city PD and FD use them, and they must have something dependable.]
I saw 2 wooly caterpillars today ... they both had all the sections the same size. I guess that means a lot of snow all winter. I think winter will be early because my Monkshood is blooming and it usually blooms in November or the end of October. I have photos of the blooms with snow on them. We have already had frost twice.
I think we have enough wood for 3 years. With DS moving back home-first thing he bought was big spliter. Said split wood by hand when young. Some of wood red elm-good on cold night.
