Hemispheres that is but the subject line limit was reached before I could say it. Today up here it is the shortest day of the year, lasting only 9 hours 32 minutes and tonight will be the longest night of the year, lasting 14 hours 28 minutes. Making it the opposite in the southern hemisphere...longest day followed by the shortest night. At 12:11 P.M. Eastern Standard Time the sun reached it's furthest point on the southern journey, it paused -motionless, then started it's journey back north. Solstice means "Stationary Sun". It is actually the Earth that is tipped on it's axis 23.5 degrees, the Sun really hasn't been moving From now until June 21st in the northern hemisphere, each day will be a few minutes longer than the day before it and the nights will become shorter and shorter. Again, the opposite holds true for the southern hemisphere. Happy Winter/Summer Solstice and have fun in whatever way you celebrate.
Thanks Toni. Wishing you a happy solstice as well. It marks a optimistic moment for us here. I just wish that the length of daylight would be more more perceptible.
Now, Who put the earth that way. Lets get them to put it back straightttt. All kidding aside toni, You explained that beautifully. It was a pleasure to read..
Today, being the shortest day, meant that in some parts of Scotland, we experienced only 6 hours of daylight and 18 hours of darkness. I'm always glad when the winter solstice comes around as I know the days will gradually get longer.
Bring on the longer days and warmer weather! Only about 2 months until we switch to Daylight Savings Time !
I could do without daylight savings time though. I am just settling in for the winter, and still have fall chores to finish. All that lovely snow melted. We had about 10+ inches in that storm two weeks ago-- or was it three weeks by now?-- and now we are getting rain.
Wehad a huge storm roll through overnight. It started at 45f in the evening, by midnight it was warm (55f) and then the wind howled through the trees knocking down a few that were already dead (and right across the neighbors driveway) so we got up and had to clear their driveway first thing this morning. But, for WINTER it was a sweaty job.
Good morning, it is already the 23rd Dec here and it seems after a quick look around the forum[world] that there are only a few of us 'down under' that have experienced a summer solstice AND received a special'solstice patch'......thankyou and YAY! Today will be 3 secs shorter than yesterday, so I better get on with it, Christmas Day, the day after tomorrow! Happy Christmas everyone and prosperous new year.
