being the 50th anniversary of Pres. John F. Kennedy's assassination, do you remember where you were when you heard of his death? I was in the Navy, stationed at NAS Oceana at Virginia Beach Va. Me and a friend had hitch hiked to Rocky Mount, North Carolina for the weekend. As we checked into the YMCA hotel, we heard it on TV. I immediately called the squadron that we were attached to see if they were recalling people. They weren't so we spent the weekend there. But we were glued to the tv in the lobby to find out what had happened. The rooms didn't have TV's. For $1.25 per night, they didn't have anything but a single bed, sink and a bitty closet! dr was in the Navy and stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. I had walked to the shopping center a mile or two from the house with our oldest son in his carriage. We were in a "dime store" when I heard it on the store system. I just quit shopping and walked back home. I couldn't believe it but we were glued to the tv, also. They did not call up extras there either. dooley
I was a little kid in second grade. I do remember my teacher's and other adults, including my mom and dad's shock and grief. Other than that, I don't remember having too many personal feelings about it. I was too young to comprehend it. I remember seeing the horse drawn carriage and the funeral procession walking in the streets of Washington on the T.V.
Well I was born in the second half of the 1970s. So no way I'd remember any of this. But we in Pakistan (historically speaking) do cherish his wife Jacqueline's visit. See video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbQlpCwr_60 On this visit (March 23, 1962) Pakistan's President Ayub Khan, in a gesture of goodwill - Gave first lady Jacqueline Kennedy a horse named Sardar (meaning Leader). Jacqueline Kennedy was to return to Pakistan the next year with her husband JFK. But he got assassinated before that could happen. I was told by my family elders that those were the times when Pakistan and USA were working together close against USSR. The famous U2 spy plane getting shot down over Russia (piloted by Gary Powers) had actually taken off from the Pakistani city of Peshawar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAvslqQK2fU For this, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev publicly said that he will wipe Pakistan off the map... But we continued to defiantly thumb our nose in his direction! By the way, it was Sardar the horse who pulled JFK's body on the carriage... I mean, who knew that he'd end up doing this sad duty... I had just returned back to our hanger from eating lunch and everyone was standing around a radio listening to the news. We didn't get any work done the rest of the day. Jerry
I was in third grade. Some teachers cried when they heard it. They closed the school and sent us home.
I was a Senior in high school. We had to stay at the school until parents came to pick us up and I hadn't driven the car that morning so I stayed in the cafeteria watching the TV until my Mom got there. We were all watching TV the night Oswald was shot, my parents saw it but I was in the shower at the time. Perrin Air Force Base, about 10 miles west of us was on high alert and scrambled all their planes in the air, it sure was noisy out there.
I was 9 years old and we were at home that day. It was my youngest brother's third birthday, and his name was also John Francis [after a great grandfather]. We were glued to the TV set also.
