I was out in my in mini-farm hunting snails at night and I noticed a pleasant fragrance. As I moved towards the source of the fragrance, I was totally surprised with the beautiful sight.

The luffa/petola is in full bloom and it looks like a happily decorated christmas tree. The sight is beautiful and the fragrance is enchanting.

This is how the same plant looks like in the day time. I had planted 3 luffas and now only I knew they bloom at night with such enchanting fragrance. Incidentally just harvested a fruit today :)

What a wonderful surprise that must have been for you KK. Your luffa blooms do look like Christmas tree decorations don't they? I didn't know they produced fragrant flowers - a great bonus to discover.
What do you do with luffa fruit by the way?

Very pleasant looking indeed, almost exactly like the Bitter Gourd vine we often grow over here - Flowers as well as the leaves are almost alike.

Gardens are wonderful, and not only in the daytime! Is that the luffa that luffa sponges are made from? I never realized it was such a beautiful plant, and fragrant, too!

Eileen, I was pleasantly surprised and sometimes in the night I just go out to enjou the sight and fragrance. I eat the fruits and they are delicious - http://www.gardenstew.com/about19636.html , sometime Becky make soup with it.

Sojerd thanks, maybe I can bottle the fragrance and mail it to you :D

    Cherylad, thanks. :)

Daisybeans, glad you love it! :-D

S-H, I have a bitter gourd plant just behind the luffa, you can see it in the photo of the luffa plant in the day time. It's almost a like but not as leafy and majestic as the luffa.

Marlingardener, yes it is the same luffa that luffa sponges are made from.

Netty thanks, this is actually my third attempt I think and I guess I finally got it right :D Don't give up try again, it is really well worth it. :D

I grew some in Arizona but the heat and dry weather got them. I'll have to try them again here in Texas. I'll watch for seeds in the spring. dooley

Fantastic! I too have tried to grow Luffas with no success but have seen them growing in France. Seeing your fab display tempts me into tracking down some seed and trying again next year.
