We’ve had some good weather over here lately and so work in the allotment has continued. There hasn’t been a great deal of planting, but there have been other things to do. One bit of planting on the schedule was the spuds. First the bed had to be prepared—the mulch had to be raked aside, the weeds schoffeled and the soil had to be min-tilled and then raked level. Because of the cool weather the inspection of the bees had to wait until now. They were flying out and so the inspection went easy. This is what I saw as soon as I took the cover off. A closer look shows the content workers and the queen. Can you spot her? She looks differently from the daughters. Have another look. That’s her up close to the corner. They girls were busy foraging for pollen, nectar and water. The peas are looking good, although it is difficult to see them through the gauze pen that I have surrounding them with. The onions are coming along as well. There was a little visitor. It was the end of the day, but still I was a little concerned to see this little chappy. Today we returned to give the new plants water as there is no rain in sight for the coming days. It is good to be out in the sun and working again. The grass paths needed mowing, so I did that quickly as well.
Sjoerd, if you keep posting pictures of your gorgeous, growing, and weed-free plots, I'll either die of envy or send you some weeds! Your peas are really coming along well. Do you enclose them for protection from the "wee chappie"?
Jane— chuckle. Weeds.....mmmm..... will I have the option to decline, with respect? Yes, I am pleased with the peas so far. Of what you see there, I planted some directly into the ground and then later added my extra’s that I had germinated in the greenhouse. Mister Hedgehog is not a threat to them, the pen is to protect against birds and voles. So far it has worked a treat. DW—How are you planning on getting your greenhouse assembled?
Most of the time we really have not even thought about it.....so fed up with the whole 'thing'. We sited it in at least 4 places. One day it was sited up behind the seating area pond and the wind took up suddenly with a gust and blew the pvc panels up the garden...laugh or moan I laughed and Husband moaned..His fault that time....I had spent a good half a day levelling the ground there and then we could not get the base system in the ground..kept hitting a rock or two, our ground is fall of rocks and stones of all shapes and sizes, it ended up going back to site No. 2 next to the Chicken House/Pen also in our view from our main use room. I had to build up the two corners and along each side, spent the best part of another half a day on getting that squared up....We still could not quite get the pvc panels in, followed the facts of keeping the screws loose so there was leeway but it failed so had we. Few days later Husband dismantled and even shovelled my levelling mounds out....No Plans at the moment Sjoerd....
What a headache, DW. I hope that you can finally get that thing sorted. They are so handy to have. You may have to lay a slab of level cement or something. I feel for you. Don’t give up.
We layed some slabs, once we had(me)levelled it and so they are in a neat pile now... just waiting to we used again...We have had glass and pvc green houses before, so do have previous experience...just maybe missing something with this model........
