46.5 hours in 4 days, and a Dr. appt on Monday, but on the bright side, I met and talked to one of my customers for a good half hour on Thursday. Of course we talked gardening. He is growing some kind of open pollinated heirloom tomato that he hasn't ID'd yet. He said a Native American woman at his church gave him seeds.

According to him, last year his plants were 8 feet tall, and he got tomato's that averaged 10 inches in diameter, with a best of 16 inches. Meaty tomato with minimal juice.

I saw his plants, very thick and sturdy stem and an upright habit. Not potato leaved, like I expected though. He has 15 or so in a bed 6x10. A bit cramped, but he says he has great success.

Imma beg, plead, and make promises in order to get some seeds from him this year to grow next!

Oh yes please do as I'm sure everyone here would love to see how they grow for you. 10 to 16 inches for one tomato must be close to record breaking sizes.

FBG, that man needs to spread the joy--keeping the tomato seeds to himself, a crop failure, and pfffft,, they are gone. Tell him about biodiversity, the joy of sharing, and failing those incentives, promise him your first born child!
Have you considered stealing one of his ripe tomatoes?

Miss Jane, a covert operation has crossed my mind. I could always blame it on the deer! Miss Eileen, if'n I do get some seeds, I'll be sharing the wealth when I grow them out. I might could even send some to my 'imaginary' garden friends in Europe.

FBG, this is not from personal experience ;);) but I have "heard" that during covert operations wearing dark clothing and conducting said operation late at night helps. Also, check to see if area has large dog. If so, take along bacon. Dogs love bacon and become your friend for life if offered bacon.

What is up with these long work weeks? This week I have the same amount of workload this week. What happened to the enjoyable summertime quiet times at work? This week was very busy for me at work I really didn't have anytime to do anything to the flowers I have on my back porch. At least they got some water though. :)

FBG... go ask to help him "thin" the tomatoes by removing some of those suckers (which is good for air movement anyway). Take a few of them home and plant them in the dirt and put a milk jug (with the bottom cut off and the cap removed) over it like a miniature greenhouse for a week and you'll have your very own secret seed stash started.
I feel for you on those hours. I work about 50-60, but ALL are gardening hours. I take Sunday as my day of rest, but there is always something needing watered in the greenhouse. After last nights storm I am lucky to have any of my plants left. 3 inches in 40 minutes. high wind and a little hail. rushing river Keiper was in full force again. Just awful!.
