Taken as I was driving home yesterday. Yes, Bucksnort Tennessee really does exist. There really is such a place. Normal people (well, ignoring the fact that they're southern) actually live in a town with that ridiculous name. What's more, I even know a couple of them! That lead to a search. I discovered we also have Bugscuffle and Bugtussle, (I have no idea but it makes me squirm, given how phobic I am about bugs!) Defeated and Difficult (someone having a bad day perhaps?) Sweet Lips and Love Lady, (I'm so not going there!) Finger and Flippin (really lol?) Skullbone, Nameless, Duck Town, Soddy-Daisy, and my two personal favorites, Lick Skillet and Yum-Yum....to name a few other towns in the good ole' Volunteer State, in which relatively normal people also live (again, considering they're southern, and would actually CHOOSE to live in towns with such ridiculous names.) Welcome to the South.
That got a belly laugh from me! I have to forward this to my son. He lives in Antioch. Anyway, I looked at my state and nothing compares with your list but we do have a Bliss and a very descriptive Mud Lake.
I suppose if you are a Bucksnorter(proper denomym for a local resident) you have to be able to absorb the snickers and comments. Some town names, though unpopular with some residents, are used in hugely popular events. As a former resident of New Mexico, I am aware of the name change of Hot Springs, NM to Truth or Consequences, NM. The change did not make all the townsfolk happy. Still, 65 years later the town of T or C has a fiesta on the first week of May as a result of the TV game host, Ralph Edwards’ inticement to change its name. Jerry
One legend says that one of the original settlers was a man named Buck who made and sold Moonshine. Folks would say they were going to Buck's to get a snort. Over time the name was shortened. It's not just a southern thing, http://www.legendsofamerica.com/loa-oddplacenames.html Every state has some odd named places.
