To blog or not to blog, that is the question.

Category: Miscellaneous | Posted: Sat Jan 20, 2007 9:33 am

Hi. Right at the very start I have to say that I'm not a natural bloggist, so entries may be at best sparse, or at worst gather cobwebs.
You see, I'm usually too busy busying myself with other things to sit for any length of time at the pc trying to impress upon anyone that what I do, or think, is of significant interest for them to sit for any length of time at their pc to read it.
So, the conditions for reading any of this is that the reader should at no time hold their breath.
Most of my, sometimes weird, antics are covered in the Gardenstew Forums in any case.
I might just use this space to add occasional jottings that might occur to me.
For most of my life I've followed a creative path. I live for creativity. The only thing I haven't created (yet) is a family of my own. But I have a great older brother, nephew and niece.
I never married you see, and the chances are I probably won't now. That doesn't bother me one iota, and never has done.
I would describe myself as a natural 'loner'. That sounds sad, and lonely, but in fact isn't at all. I am so relaxed with my own company that I think nothing of it. And I can just get on with almost whatever I want. I call it freedom.
I was born into a, seemingly, creative family in 1947, in South London, no doubt kicking and screaming. But soon settled down within a very loving family, and a thoroughly pleasant childhood.
And as I look back over the last 60 years, I feel I've been very fortunate to have a family that has always inspired me to get off my butt and do things.
There are seven simple words I always remember, once said to me by a previous managing director, when I enquired how he got his ideas for new business ventures...
'If you don't try, you don't get.'
He started as a one employee business, indeed tried, and got, and ended up a millionaire...almost all in the course of the short time I knew him.
But money isn't everything. The satisfaction of having done something that personally pleases me is, for me at least, usually enough.
So my life so far has been full of many diverse projects. Board game design, toy design, modelmaking both in a commercial and hobby context, painting, music, sculpture, cartooning, gardening, photography.
And I've loved every darned minute of it.

I really hope you find a new home here in your blog Pete, it's great to add to now and then and you'll be surprised how good comments are :)

I also relate to you a lot on the subject of enjoying one's own company, I enjoy mine a lot and can easily go a day without speaking to anyone else if I am stuck in a project. When I spent 1 and a half years in Malta in 2002 the first 3 months where in practical isolation because I didn't know anyone there. I really learned to relax in my own company then and it has stuck with me ever since. I believe it to be a big asset.

There is indeed much to enjoy about being alone. I have lived alone more in my life than with someone else. I like my own skin and am selfish enough to prefer my own company over the company of others. While I have not all the creative outlets as you, Pete, I have my own, sadly, many of which involve a computer keyboard or lacking that, a pencil. Creativity is indeed, a solitary endeavor.

Great to see you've started a blog Pete.
Although my husband and daughter both live here too most of the time I am on my own and that is definately the way I like it. I love to potter around doing my own things without others getting in the way.

What type of board games and toys have you designed and do you have any pictures of the? I know - I'm being nosey again but I do so love to see what others get up to!!

Eileen - Although I have other ideas still under wraps, Jigstones has been my main 'toy' contribution - still going after 15 years and mainly in the US.
I enjoy the challenge of evolving ideas. But I'm afraid that any that I might want to push a little harder, for obvious reasons have to remain secret. I have a new game currently on trial within the family (the best way to test something without someone pinching it) and so far it looks very promising.
At least it's kept them amused for a few hours!
Pete.

Designing a board game or a game of any sort sounds very interesting Pete. The simplest ideas are always the best. Wishing you the best of luck with your new project!

I enjoyed reading your blog, Pete.
I debated beginning my blog, as well,
I have never been a diarist, and my entries are rather sparce and random.

I believe that the person wise enough to define personal success and happiness in their own terms,
and astute enough to recognize contentment and happiness when they have it,
is fortunate, indeed.

I enjoyed reading your blog Pete. I am a once in awhile blog writer. I tend to think my life is not soething too exciting for others to read about.

Please do blog. This above all else, is a place where no one ever complains about what is said, given no ugly language. I think you may have much to add to this site. One can never have too many points of view.
