Sad situation here.We I finally took down all of my feeders to see if I can get a handle on the salmonella my birds (mostly pine siskins) have been dropping dead from. I built a different smaller feeder out of scraps I had. It has a feeding shelf that the birds can only sit on and not get in the seed and contaminate it. Got my hubby to help me get down a sheet of plywood we had up in the barn. So now this week I will see about refirbishing the platform feeder into a self feeding with only a small space for the seeds to come out of like the above feeder I built. I also have been scattering seeds around the deck in different locations so the birds have some seed to eat. Had a cardinal show up the other day and look around like he was saying. What the blankity, blank is going on here. I knew there was a feeder here yesterday. Will post some pic's of the feeders. Well I better get some breakfast in me and then off to work. Have a super great day. This blog entry has been viewed 411 times

The birds have probably picked up the Salmonella from elsewhere Tooty. It's just a pity that they appear to be dying on your property. As long as you keep your feeders clean as you're doing then you can rest assured that they're not picking up any disease from you.
I hope not. We must have had over 12 pine siskins die in the last 3 wks.
Tooty--I am sorry this is happening. How do you know it is salmonella?
YIKES! I am so sorry about your birds. Hopefully it will clear up soon. =(
I have been finding dead Pine Siskins the last few weeks around my house as well and went searching for info and found this forum. We are northern Michigan. The first one I found was hopping around and came right to me and let me pick it up. It expired about 2 hours later. The others I found were dead for a while. I called the DNR and they were no help except to tell me to take my feeders down. I raked up all the shells (sunflower) from below them and put out brand new feeders so I will see how it goes. What I find strange is it is only the Siskins that are affected. The birds cannot perch on my feeders - they are the wire ones with the cylinder inside. I sure hope this stops soon.
