Longwood Roses with WrenI often visit Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa. It is only about an hours drive from my home in NJ. This painting was done from a reference photograph I took of some of their roses. ![]() Longwood Roses with Wren ( photo / image / picture from kathyd's Garden ) This blog entry has been viewed 1186 times

Oh Kathy. I love Longwood Gardens. I go there every year. It's about 2 hours from me, straight north.
What a wonderful, lifelike painting. The roses are executed perfectly.
Hi Kathy, do you paint the background first and then layer over the foreground objects? The detail is great.
Waretrop, I usually have a garden pass, this year I haven't been there quite as often...I will probably renew in the dead of winter as I usually do...that's when I need the blooms the most. Eileen, thank you for the kind comment. Frank, yes, I paint the background first. Sometimes I mask the foreground subjects with masking fluid, at other times, I just carefully, brush around them. I like to combine the flowing look of non-controlled painting, with the more detailed look of the center of interest. I really enjoy myself when I paint. Thanks!
Thanks for answering my question Kathy :D
