Rodos part III - Rodini park

Category: Ramblings | Posted: Tue Aug 12, 2008 7:52 pm

We like to visit Rodini park when in Rodos. There's nothing awe-inspiring or colourful about it, but it's a peaceful oasis with lots of trees, water, peacocks, turtles and fish. There were animals and birds earlier, but not any more. It's been very overgrown for many years, but this year held a nice surprise for us. They've started to clean it up, and the café is open again. Here are a few photos from the park:

The welcome committee:

A lovely pond and fountain:

Waterlilies growing in the back of the pond:

Look at how they've supported the limbs of this tree with concrete columns:

Eucalyptus trees. They look bark-less:

There were a few dooleys floating about:

And a few of these, but they wouldn't show themselves properly:

Some sort of grass growing by the stream. It was at least 4 meters tall:

A lovely piece of aqueduct I think:

This furry herb smelled like Salvia, but had yellow buttonish blooms:

I wanted to snatch a couple of these bulbs, but didn't. I think they're Dranunculus bulbs:

I'm looking forward to seeing the park the next time we're visiting Rodos. There are grottos in the bank of the gully, and we're hoping to be allowed a peek inside them at some time.

It's always a happy thing when people start to respect and keep their environment. we all need to do that - respect our environment. The aqueduct is a wonderful feature of the park.

I enjoyed this park. Sometimes I like the wild looking parks better than the neat trim ones where you are afraid to stop to smell the flowers. I'm glad there were dooley's floating around the pond and park. Thanks for their pictures. dooley

Are you sure you weren't in Malta because that's just like a park I used to frequent also :) Thanks for the vicarious experience Droopy.

This third installment is really good. I can see why you folks like this place. I'll bet the kids especiually liked the animals and water.
Your series is so interesting.

I'm glad that the park is now being cared for. It certainly looks like a great place to visit. Supporting the trees instead of just cutting them down is a great idea. It certainly looks as though the wildlife appreciate the clean up too.

The dooleys came and begged for cookie crumbs and we gave them a few. The fish also wanted some, but I think the turtle wasn't sharing. The girls like to sit and watch the water life. It's very different from what we have.

Frank, I'm positive we were in Rodos. *lol*

Supporting tree limbs seems to be a widespread practice. We see trees like that all over the island.

I'm glad to hear of someone else who appreciates Rodini Park. I was on holiday in Rhodes in September and asked a taxi driver to take me there. He said "why? There's nothing there" Perhaps that's why this parkis such a hidden secret. In my opinion it has a peaceful ambience that I have not experienced before. You lose yourself there and feel you're back in time. I am unable to walk very long distances but felt driven to keep pressing forward. I think I may have missed the tombstones and indeed the pond. We walked quite a distance so I don't know how that happened. Flights from Belfast no longer go direct to Rhodes so it will cost me much more to go this year but it's worth it just to visit the park again.

Smiler, I had to snicker at the taxi driver's comment. That's exactly what they tell us when we ask them to take us there too. I hope you'll get to go there, please bring our regards to that lovely, quiet oasis of Rodos.
