Olympia Washington

Category: Stomping Grounds | Posted: Sat Jul 25, 2009 7:39 am

Olympia is the capital city of Washington state. It is a small city at the southern most tip of Puget Sound so the inlet brushes up against downtown much of which is built on fill from dredging the bay. We enjoy going to the boardwalk to look at the boats and to visit the Farmer's Market. Durning salmon runs in the spring harbor seals can be seen feasting on the salmon from the boardwalk.

Today there was a group of kids getting sailing lessons. It looked like it turned exciting.

The state capital grounds are a lot of lawn and open spaces.

The capital gardens are almost non-existent due to budget cuts and the loss of the Capital Campus Greenhouses due to damage from the last earthquake and settling of the building.

This is a great series of pics of your town! I love it when stew-friends show us their part of the world. Olympia is lovely. The gardens are great and the architecture too -- what is that last building? I'd love to see a picture of the seals during the salmon run. When is that, I wonder?

You've inspired me to get my pics of my town on here too.

Thanks Jewell!

What a beautiful town.
The Capital grounds are beautiful, hopefully there are volunteers available to take up the slack where the budget gets cut.

Thanks for the tour.

Wonderful pics...the 1st few made me homesick for my home state of Connecticut. I lived one mile from Long Island sound for 40 years in Branford before getting married and moving to Nebraska.
i'm definately landlocked now...LOL...a fish out of water! :)

The last picture is of the old capitol building. My mother worked there for years after working for the legislature. A beautiful building, inside and out. Both buildings, especially the "new" capitol, are well worth a tour. Words cannot describe...I've seen a few state capitols over the years. None compare in my opinion.
