The red patch is just a male thing, you didn't think I would of missed mentioning it if it helped with the ID did you. Both species males have it. Here is the male downy showing his off.

Our Great spotted and Lesser spotted males have the red on their heads too Kildale. Like yours though it is absent in the female.
