I spent most of the weekend and this week clearing this whole area and digging out to make it somewhat level.
Since the bushes give partial afternoon shade I started lettuce in this bed since they don't mind being shaded in the hottest time of the day here.
Grandpa Admire's Lettuce on the right, a heat tolerant butterhead. Yugoslavian Red on the left, also a butterhead type.
I tried potatoes last year in black bags and they did really badly. My daddy said the roots might have gotten too hot. This year I'm trying white. I can also move these around as space/sun is needed. I'm trying Yukon Gold this year.

We have a frost going on tonight so I'll have to wait on the other plants. I have a lot started and some that need to go in the ground soonest. But it feels wonderful to be able to play in the dirt.
That area to the right in the back is the herb garden in it's infancy. I found no less than 2 wheelbarrow loads of bricks buried under a ton of dirt. I did find a use for them, I put them around the edges of my new bed to keep mud splashes at a min hopefully.
The space in the back and to the left gets loads of sun so there will be two beds there, beans and cukes probably. I'll also be adding flowers in and around the beds.

I know, I know! But 6, now 4, teenagers have kept me so busy I've rarely had time to do much more than fall into bed in a stupor most days.
I did want to share my pretty bushes though. I know most places are still cold but gladly I don't live in those places lol. I'm not a good cold weather kinda gal.
Hopefully I'll finally have a bit of free time this year as most of the kids are nearly grown. I'm planting my garden soon so I'll actually have something to take pictures of!
