Spring Cleaning and Dreaming
Category: Here Birdy, Birdy, Birdy! | Posted: Fri Mar 11, 2011 5:26 pm Well, I have had much patience all winter with attracting feather friends. I think that next year will be better now that they know there is a great local restaurant in the area. I did a little Spring Cleaning by setting up a little "make do" bird bath (until I can find one I like) and hung three different kinds of feeders in my backyard area I have designated for the birds. Doves, Junos, Blackbirds, Cardinals and Robins so far. I plan on planting a nice little garden to compliment the bird bath and have natural sources of food for them as well. Now I am just waiting on Mother Nature to turn up the temps! This blog entry has been viewed 1327 times

Patience
Category: Here Birdy, Birdy, Birdy! | Posted: Wed Dec 15, 2010 8:10 pm The winds have been blowing, the temperatures are dropping, and snow has even graced our December already. I have had a few birds to my cafe. Some Morning Doves have been having tea with me as well. Going to make some homemade bird feeders with the kids sometime this week. The squirrels and feathered friends should surely enjoy. If I build it they will come, right?! So for now, I shall have patience....and Jasmine Green Tea. This blog entry has been viewed 1920 times
My Confession
Category: Junkalicious | Posted: Tue Dec 14, 2010 2:54 pm I have a confession. I am a junker, salvation army, value village, discount store, garage/yard sale, consignment, thrift store, freebie junkie. I always have said I get my shopping issues from my mother and my frugality from my aunt. I truly believe one man's junk is another man's treasure/pleasure. Also, this keeps items out of the landfill! My last shopping excursion I found a wooden item that I will be painting and hanging in the spring as a birdhouse! I also found a lovely picture to hang in my living room, that says Live, Laugh, Love. Every Wednesday my local store has clothing and bric-a-brac 50% off! So I had been eying up the "Bird House" that was $5.99. My total shopping trip for the day: $5. and some change for both items!! SCORE! I will post before and after pics later:-) This blog entry has been viewed 1920 times
Paper-whites
Category: Wish List | Posted: Tue Dec 14, 2010 2:34 pm I was visiting a feed store yesterday that I had not been to before. I will be returning, for I filled up two brown bags of bird seed for @ $5.00! Of course I couldn't resist perusing the garden aisle while there! Planters, and seeds, fertilizers, oh my!:-) At the check out, it occurred to me that I hadn't bought my traditional December flowers. The Paper-white! I love when they grow and dance with the sun.(I continuously turn them for they dramatically grow in the direction of the sun shine.)There aroma fills the room with promises of spring! They had sold out, my search will continue to where I bought them in previous years, they sell out fast. This blog entry has been viewed 1894 times
Serenity
Category: Here Birdy, Birdy, Birdy! | Posted: Fri Dec 10, 2010 2:01 pm I have always loved the outdoors, but Winter has never been on my favorite lists. This morning I sat on my front porch, awaiting birds to my feeders, with some Hot Apple Cider and my thoughts. The sun was just starting to envelope its golden rays through gray skies upon the houses, animals, and people going to work.I watched the squirrels scamper around working hard at storing food for winter, while the ground is still free of white blankets. I thought about all the people still tucked cozy and warm in their slumber cocoons of pajamas and blankets. I thought about how my Dad used to say to me "Don't sleep the day away!" (When I was in my teens) Now as I begin my 30's, I understand what he meant. I have been missing the serenity of Winter mornings. This blog entry has been viewed 353 times
Woolly Bully
Category: Weather | Posted: Tue Nov 23, 2010 5:45 pm The weather here in Maryland today feels like Spring, we are even going to get some showers this week. Where has this month gone??? It is already the end of November!! With this in mind, I started to remember the snows of last year and decided to descend outside to start planning some winter projects. (such as winter sowing :-) I was thinking about vegetables and all, being that is Thanksgiving:-) I was planning and straightening up outside when behind a planter I found the carcass of a Woolly Bear Caterpillar.(RIP) For those that are not familiar with the species it is the larval stage of the Isabella moth. It has black and brown stripes and looks as if it is wearing an expensive sweater! Well as superstition goes, they can predict the forecast for winter with the black stripes on the ends of the Caterpillar. Short stripes of black = light winter weather and longer stripes of black = Harsher winter weather. Well my deceased furry friend was all black!! What does that forecast for our winter?!?! Then it hit me, the song, "Woolly Bully,....Watch it now, watch it!" (Please forgive me for getting this song stuck in your head. :-)) This blog entry has been viewed 397 times
The Little Things In Life
Category: Here Birdy, Birdy, Birdy! | Posted: Thu Nov 18, 2010 5:30 pm This morning I went out to my backyard to ponder my Spring Garden, feel the sun's warmth, and the Autumn breeze. As I was thinking of cucumbers, beans, peppers, flowers and warm weather, a Dragonfly landed on my windowsill and decided to stay a while! I shall take it as a sign, a delivered message of hope and abundance in my backyard. I returned inside to finish a few chores. Later in the morning, I decided to have some tea on my front porch, since the weather is rather mild today. I leaned over to put my tea down and to my surprise a Praying Mantis is sitting upon my table. He was about 2 inches long. What a great way to start the day, with two unexpected visitors! I am very thankful for the little things in life today! This blog entry has been viewed 335 times
Blackbird Greetings
Category: Here Birdy, Birdy, Birdy! | Posted: Tue Nov 16, 2010 10:06 pm I was greeted this morning with a "Wave" from some blackbirds! It is an amazing sound to hear all those wings flapping at one time. I love the little "game" they play with flying off and then back, off and then back:-) I also had a few squirrels and I think I have even piqued a couple other kinds of birds interest! Autumn
Category: Garden Quotes | Posted: Mon Nov 15, 2010 3:55 pm O Autumn, laden with fruit, and stained With the blood of the grape, pass not, but sit Beneath my shady roof; there thou may'st rest, And tune thy jolly voice to my fresh pipe; And all the daughters of the year shall dance! ...Sing now the lusty song of fruit and flowers. - William Blake, To Autumn, 1783 This blog entry has been viewed 354 times
