Settling in for Winter
Category: My Garden Projects | Posted: Sun Nov 11, 2012 6:16 am This morning, Sat. 10NOV12, between 06:30 to 07:00 my garden wildlife observations.. A few squirrels as always but a surprising variety of birds, Turtle Doves Cardinals Mocking Birds Blue Jays Carolina Wrens Red Head Woodpecker Red Wing Blackbirds, first time seeing these guys.. These birds visit the lawn underneath two pecan trees in my back yard.. I suspect they're picking up the pieces of fallen pecans that the mower shattered as the lawn was mowed recently.. I've taken a few pics but the results are very unsatisfactory as the zoom function on my cheap camera want bring them in nearly enough to find the bird when pic is uploaded onto the computer.. (I know about enlarging the pic and croppig out the subject (bird) but, cheap 2.1 Pixel camera again, enlarging the pic enough to see the bird becomes so grainy/fuzzy you can hardly tell it is a bird, forget determining variety.) One of my young 2nd cousins began construction on a lean-to extension on my shed that's needed for weather protection and security for mower, tiller, line trimmer, etc. This blog entry has been viewed 352 times
Begin Winter Garden
Category: My Garden Projects | Posted: Sat Nov 03, 2012 4:12 pm Good Morning to all (03NOV12), it has been a very pleasant morning here at my Alabama Acres so far.. I've spent several minutes standing at my back door (inside looking thru glass) watching the wildlife activities in my back yard.. Of the feathered visitors I saw were Turtle Doves, Blue Jays, Cardinals, one small guy about half the size of a cardinal; plus squirrels galore playing in my pecan trees and gathering pecans also, I presume.. Lamented the fact that camera had been left in vehicle so couldn't take any pics of the activity that I was observing; to have went out to fetch the camera would have startled and disrupted all the furry and feathered friends.. Temperatures are getting back up after a cold snap of a few days which put night time lows in the mid-low 30's F.. I made a trip down to DeFuniak Springs, FL yesterday, 02NOV12, about 43 miles one-way; (had to go into Florida to renew my Florida Drivers License..) While there I stopped in the [Lowe's (Big Box) store] and wouldn't you know it, nearly forty dollars worth of stuff followed me out of there.. It was mostly fall/winter veggie plants like collards, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, a couple of herb plants, oregano and parsley and two little 4" pots of 'Dusty Miller' because it was marked down to $0.50 each and I've always liked the looks of it... Now comes the hard part,,,,,,,,,, getting all that stuff in the ground/garden and watered so I can start worrying about freezing weather killing it all... Well, enough for now, takes me too long to write more than a sentence or two.. This blog entry has been viewed 381 times
