Rain Just When I Needed It
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sun Jun 23, 2013 4:49 pm We worked ALL DAY weeding and renovating two berms yesterday, digging out the dogwood that died on me, and the wild tree that decided to grow in it's place. Replaced it with a Black Lace Elderberry. It looked interesting so I had to give it a try (berm on the left). The berm on the right, we started all over with it. I divided some hostas from my hosta "farm", found a Mountain Fire Pieris (Pieris japonica) which claims it'll grow in the shade, we'll see. It doesn't show up in the pic due to the shade. Surrounded that with impatiens in a matching color. Will try to get some mulch on that today. Got it all edged too! 
Got most the weeding done in the vegetable garden. Just a few places to touch up left to do. Re-tilled where I'd planted watermelon, decided I'd rather have more tomatoes! Found a bunch of heirloom varieties for $.75 at the hardware store.

Save me, save me!
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sun Jun 16, 2013 5:34 pm My front garden was invaded by various weeds that weren't too hard to pull after a rain. Just time consuming to follow the weeds to the roots and pull them out. But I uncovered a little rose that had been overrun by weeds. It might not be much, but was a pleasant surprise. 
You can see the tiny rose with full size blooms in the background, maybe it'll do something better next year if I give it a little TLC. I'll never know what kind it is for sure (looking a little Chicago Peace-like to me), but the red one is Hot Cocoa.

TGIF Bouquet
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Fri Jun 14, 2013 10:06 pm I'm working a 2nd job this summer, but cut a deal to get off at noon every Friday so I can work outside weather permitting. Lucky me, weather permitted today! So I got the front garden weeded, planted a few annuals in the bald spots, and collected some flowers to bring inside. I'm going to like Fridays.

My Honey Dijon comes back well in my climate which surprises me, as does my Chicago Peace and all the varieties of Fairy roses. I have found the newer tea roses tend not to survive the winter here, so I quit buying them. This blog entry has been viewed 365 times
Rainy Day
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sat Jun 08, 2013 7:23 pm Rained out again today. So I'm watching PBS and came across a show called Iowa Herbs. After that, I made an omelet with herbs from my garden tote herb garden. Yum. That triggered the idea to transfer the herbs to a bigger container and place it on the deck. So that's exactly what I did today! Transferred what I had, and bought a few new things. The larger pot will help a lot.

My Hosta Farm

I grew a patch of 3-4 varieties here, and then I can grab one and divide it any time I need to fill in a spot somewhere on the property. Very handy, especially with the price they're charging for just starts.

Free Plants
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Tue Jun 04, 2013 4:38 pm I cleared out the areas next to the house last year, knowing the contractors would trample anything that was there installing the siding. Luckily, I have so many varieties of hosta that I just took some baby starts, and cut out a piece of a few others to transplant into this shady area along the house. With the cool weather and regular rain, I'm sure they will be fine. Now I must ask my husband if the septic cleanout stack really needs to be that tall! The hosta I put around it will get quite large, so hopefully they'll hide it even if we don't cut it down.

Still More Bearded Iris Blooming
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Mon Jun 03, 2013 7:33 pm I know there's still at least one more new variety that hasn't bloomed yet. But here's a new one. It thought I'd planted Lady Friend here, but I don't remember it being this dark...hmmm. 
Not new, but I just love Megabucks. 
Haven't seen my Starship Enterprise iris yet (my favorite), hoping it's the ones on the left or bottom that haven't sent up blooms yet.
