If one hive is running low on food, the bees will go to another hive and rob it. To prevent this beekeepers use robber screens. There is a small opening at the top of the screen for the hive's bees to exit and enter. "Foreign" bees from other hives don't know how to get in (up and over) and can't rob the hive. This is a robber screen made of hardware cloth and scrap lumber that we use to protect our hive.
If you look closely, you will see chicken wire in front of the hive. A roll of chicken wire prevents skunks from eating the bees. To get over the wire and at the bees, the skunk has to stand on his hind legs, which allows the bees to sting his stomach and drive him off. Skunks have thinner hair underneath and can be stung with effect. |
