The thaw is here and it’s raining finally :)
No wind just a nice consistent rain.

Good Friday morning all. Currently -4°C and mostly cloudy.
Yesterday was a lovely day, and I was able to do all my errands, shopping and driving without worry. What a nice change!
Today, weatherman says that temperatures are going above the freezing mark, so I'm hoping to spend part of the day helping snow down off the roofs around here. I have bought myself a 'roof rake' so this should make it easy. Hoping to avoid large ice dams and icicles in my gutters.
Very happy that today is finally the last day of January. Is it just me or has this been the longest month EVER?!
Have a great day all :)

Good Saturday morning all. Currently -16°C and clear. It was such a mild day yesterday, and it will be mild again today so it seems odd that it was so cold overnight.
I'm so glad that January is finally over! We are heading to the rink shortly, but not before my dog walk. Thunder and I were up very early, and we've been waiting for daylight to head out. I have noticed an increase in daylight and todays sunrise is at 7:34am, and sunset is at 5:25pm. We are gaining a few minutes every day!
Tomorrow is groundhog day, and I hope he makes a good choice haha
Have a great day all :)

Netty— yes, I am also easily noticing the days getting longer. When I go back home at tye end of the day now it is still light.
Good luck tomorrow when the big rodent comes out to play.

Good Sunday morning all. Currently -14°C and snowing. Oh joy, just what we need here is more snow!
A busy day yesterday ... we were at the rink until noon. Then home for lunch and right into craft room cleanout. Mopped the floors and dusted and then moved stuff back in, but I'm looking for some new cabinets. Then I put together my new grow light shelf only to realize the I will need to have the plug replaced with an updated one. This old house still has 2 old style plugs with only 2 slots, and all the new cords have the third ground end. I have a friend whos an electrician that I'm going to call to come replace them for me. Theres still lots of time before grow lights are needed. Today I'm canning some chick peas. I've had 2 bags soaking overnight, and that should be enough to refill the empty spot on my pantry shelf. I also have mountains of laundry to do, so its another busy day :)

@Netty - I was tired just from reading your posts. You've certainly had a wintery time of it. Do you know how much accumulation you've had? Your fit bit ( hope you find it) must be humming with activity. I meant to thank you for the link about the Fitbit. I've been contemplating one, and that helped a lot. I've also been contemplating a roof rake. I'll be curious to hear how you find it.

Today is our first taste of winter this year. It's been very mild with only a couple feet of snow so far. ( Netty is getting all of Canada's snow ). It's a good day to make some soup, have a long hot bath and watch some movies.

Good Monday morning all. Currently -4°C and overcast. We have a winter travel advisory in effect until the afternoon, due to predicted heavy snow. No winds to speak of, so I should be able to mange just fine. Our groundhog predicted an early spring, and I sure hope he is right!
Today is a tidy up day around the house. Lots of things to put away, including the laundry and canning projects from yesterday.
@Melody Mc. I couldn't even guess how much snow accumulation we have had here! I do know that the snow banks are the biggest I can remember in the almost 22 year here and that the Township has had to have snow removed from the streets and parking areas in Town. TOO much! And yes, I found my FitBit, it must have fallen off when I removed my coat near the door. Also, I highly recommend the roof rake if snow on your roof is a problem. Makes it SO much easier to get all that weight off the roof, and definitely worth the money.
Have a great day all :)

Netty— be careful with that roof rake, or else you may wind up on Canada’s Funniest Home Videos. Just sayin’.

Good Tuesday morning all. Currently -11°C and overcast. We had some giant, wet snowflakes falling yesterday. It was just enough to stick to all the trees and make it look like a winter wonderland, and remind you that snow can be beautiful and not just a huge pain in the butt.
I have a few kitchen projects planned today, then outside to shovel a bit of snow. I have a chimney sweep coming tomorrow to clean our woodstove and chimney, and he has requested that we not have a fire going 24 hours before his scheduled time, so I will stop feeding the fire around 10am. DH used to clean our chimney, and we never needed to go that long without a fire so I'm curious to see his technique. I'm always learning!
I'm off to search for rook rake videos, what could possible go wrong?
Have a great day all :)

    Thanks Netty :)

I hope the sweep goes well. Let us know what you learn! I'm curious how your sweep goes. I only learned to do ours last year.

When it stopped being wise ( impossible) for us to go up on our roof, we transitioned to a telescopic double walled stove pipe. It can be unscrewed from the stove and ceiling, and taken down in sections indoors. We have a telescopic sweeping brush to clean it. It has poles that screw together as you push it up the chimney. It's a little bit of a pain to take it all apart and put it back together, but with the pitch and height of our roofs it was much safer.

Today is another snowy cold day. It's only -24 but the wind chill is nasty. For about four days now they have asked people to only travel if absolutely necessary. We are low priority for having the road ploughed, so it will be a week or so before a grader or plough truck comes.

About four more days of this for us, and then we warm to -17as a low. I miss walking and feel quite house bound lately with a wee bit of stir crazy cabin fever mixed in, so the warm up will be nice for outside time. I think I'm feeling cooped up also because it has been a couple weeks of not seeing anyone outside of home, or going anywhere. We go to town on Feb 12th so at least that will be a change of scene. I may try to arrange coffee with my family so that I can socialize a little. :)

Today all of the asparagus, onions, leeks, and Rhodochiton seed starts were watered. I found a new seed company in Canada that is family owned and long standing. They had a lot of neat hybrids. Spring fever had me placing an order before I knew what was happening....so that will be exciting to see. I've been researching and ordering dwarf patio friendly varieties for my daughter to try. I'll have a little bundle of seed love to send to her in Northern Alberta for Valentines Day.

Good Wednesday morning all. Currently -16°C and clear.
The back half of the house is rather chilly this morning, due to having to let the fire burn out for the chimney sweep coming this morning. I put the last log in yesterday morning, as he requested no fire for 24 hours prior to the cleaning. I thought I would clean all the ashes out of the woodstove this morning, and i was amazed to still find red coals in there! Hopefully with all that removed it will be cool enough for him when he arrives. Thunder seems a little confused at it all, as laying by the woodstove is one of his favourite spots. He his actually laying beside it, staring at it haha What a silly dog! He will be happy when we can fire it up again.
I'm going to do some baking this morning, that should warm it up in here a little. There are a few bananas begging to become banana bread.
Have a great day all :)

Our youngest son, who started his chimney sweeping business two years ago, says he's still very busy. He anticipated that it would be quite quiet now, until it got warmer and people stopped using their wood burning stoves.
It might be that when people are about to renew their building's insurance, that they now have to confirm, that they have had the chimney swept within the last 12 months.
