Happy Monday :) We are having a week of "false spring" right now. It's been a crazy jump from lows in the mid twenties C to a peak high of + 14 for a few days. I actually have the bedding on the clothes line today. I can't believe it.

The creek is beginning to open up. We still have sheer ice around the house, but the areas that were ploughed on the main driveway and trails are bare. I saw three robins and two blackbirds on my walk early this morning. Hubby and I will drive to the lake to hopefully get a couple buckets of sand for the ice.

We still have lows of -4 C, so there is still a fire going. But not a roaring all day fire, just enough to keep the chill off. Angus loves this time of year because he can walk on the snow crust and not just stick to trails. He's resting today. He startled a silver tip fox beside the house when he went out for his walk last night. There is no reasoning with him when this happens, he is off like a bullet. He has not chance of catching the fox, but he sure thinks he does. He is quite spent today.

The spring weather is short lived as we are expecting more seasonal lows of - 10 to - 12 C at the end of the week. My friend is on the cusp of calving season, so hopefully it isn't too cool. The babies would love some sunshine.

@Netty - I was looking at the weather pattern map for March, and it looks like west and east trade hats. I'm "in like a lamb and out like a lion", you will get this warmth and follow the regular "in like a lion and out like a lamb". You definitely deserve the lamb. What a year you've had.

My daughter and son are living on Vancouver Island - and they have crocuses up and daffodils about to bloom. sighhhhhh. Next year the plan is to go and visit them in early spring.

Good Tuesday morning all. Currently 0°C and freezing rain. We are under a special weather statement for the next 2 days ... freezing rain turning to heavy rain with chance of flooding. Ugh, this is exactly the kind of thing I've been worried about! Heavy rain is bad enough, but add in all the melting snow and it might mean disaster. I'll be on high alert for a few days.
I have a dentist appointment this morning for a cleaning, and then home for the day. I'm going to have to find a way to keep Thunder amused indoors.
@Melody Mc. I think we are just at 'fools spring' here right now as we haven't had any signs of spring until this rain. Then we might jump straight into 'mud season'? I may still have 2 more winters to go but out like a lamb sounds good to me! I'll just be glad when 'actual spring' gets here!
Have a great day all :)

Good Wednesday morning all. Currently 2°C and raining. I think it has been raining most of the night, and we are under yet another special weather statement for heavy rain and chance of flooding, followed by a flash freeze. I don't think I remember ever having as many 'special weather statements' as we have had this winter. So far it is ok here ... the rain hasn't been too hard and the melt down hasn't started the sump pump YET.
Its an indoor job kinda day, so I'll be working on the skating clubs bookwork, as well as gathering all my tax documents. Maybe I'll also do a bit of baking.
Have a great day all :)

Morning all. We’re so glad to see blue sky and bright sun today. Yesterday was a rain event that turned into a blizzard. The winds were 40 to 50 mph and are still blowing pretty strong. There was quite a bit of drifting, but appears to be around 3-4 inches of icy snow. I’m grateful for the moisture we got. Every bit helps going into spring.
By the looks of the forecast, the snow will melt fast. It looks like a tug of war between winter and spring.

Weather conditions has been extreme this winter in the PNW too. The winds can cause havoc and property damage. Stay warm, safe and hopefully zero power outages . :fingerscrossed:

Good Thursday morning all. Currently 0°C and in the middle of a snow squall. Its been very mild and today the weather turns back to winter with squalls and high winds predicted all day. I'm not sure yet if I'm still heading out on my errand and shopping trip. We'll see how the radar looks after my morning routine.
    14 days until spring!
Have a great day all :)

We finally have sunshine and no wind! Today is straightening out everything that was blown around in the barn (nothing damaged, just displaced) and picking up branches from the yard. We'll also feed the wild birds since the sunflower seeds won't be blown out of the platform feeder, and the hanging feeder won't end up off its hook and over by the workshop.. The cat is happy too. She is not a cold weather, high wind type of feline!
I'm going to take a nap this afternoon. All this worrying about roof shingles, hens, and general mess has kept me awake at night.
Hoping you all have a calm, restful day.

Good Friday morning all. Currently -4°C and very windy with sun and a few snow squalls mixed in. Looks like Marlingardners wind is here now.
It's going to be another fun day of snow removal from the driveway as its been snowing and blowing since yesterday, and will continue most of the day. I have my eye on the 14 day forecast which shows temperatures above freezing every day after Sunday. Looking at Melody Mc's 11 seasons of Canadian winter above, that would put us in 'spring of deception' so I know that winter isn't done with us yet! Having said that, I have a sudden urge to start spring cleaning! I'll start that today, in the laundry, bathroom, and back hall area. Once spring hits, there is a lot to do outside and I'm on my own with that this year.
Have a great day all :)

Good Saturday morning all. Currently -10°C and clear. The wind has finally settled down and all is still. For now. Weatherman says we will get another day of wind, but at least the temperatures are on the rise.
We are up bright and early to head to the rink. Saturdays are busy and we are there from 7:30-noon. And I get to see the grandkids as 2 of them are in classes.
Should be a great day :)

Good Sunday morning all. Currently -3°C and overcast. There is no wind, which is a nice change.
The clocks sprung forward last night, and all the clocks in the house seemed to be different today. I'm still not even sure what time it is, but I'm thinking that since Thunder woke me to go out a while ago, that it must have been 6am old time, so 7am new time? That means its now 7:55am and we are heading out for our walk an hour late? Oh how I hate when they mess with the clocks!
Not much going on today, but I look forward to my weekly chat with my sister and visit from an old friend. I'll do some food prep this morning to help get me back on a healthy diet - I've been slipping lately and want to get back on track. Hoping the sun comes out later and I can spend some time outside. I shovelled out the garden gate yesterday and was able to get it to open and finally got into the greenhouse which was 15°C yesterday despite the cold temperatures outside. I saw the first red winged blackbird so I know that spring cant be too far away. Have a great day all :)

Netty, I agree about the disruption of daylight savings time. Try explaining it to hens and a cat--they have their own clocks and we'd better adhere to their time!
Other than trying to figure out what time it really is, not much planned for today. Windy and cold out so no outside work except what is absolutely necessary, which is caring for the hens and feeding the wild birds. We saw three deer in our orchard area this morning--when deer are on the move it means they sense a change in the weather (or are looking for an easy meal!).
Hope you all have signs of spring to enjoy!

Good Monday morning all! Its currently -3°C, sunny and the birds are singing!! Spring is in the air, today anyway. Weatherman says it will be sunny with a high of 10°C and that is going to be amazing! I can't wait to be outside and feel the sun in my face, even if there isn't much to do outside until the snow melts! I feel like its been such a long time since we had a nice day! Hopefully this will melt a lot of that white stuff without causing any flooding issues. There is no rain in the forecast until Saturday so that is good.
I was out in the shed yesterday, and noticed that the mice have chewed through the gas cap on the ole John Deere mower. I'd better get some traps set up out there today. Always something with the wildlife around here!
Have a great day all :)

Good Tuesday morning all. Currently 3°C and clear. Another lovely springish day ahead, and I'm going to make the most of it!
Yesterday I abandoned all indoor chores and headed outside. The grandkids came over and we tapped our old sugar maples, did a bit of tree trimming, and spent the afternoon outside. The weather was amazing and I kept thinking about how deserved it was after the winter we had. I set some traps in the shed for the gas cap chewing mice in the shed, which I will head out and check shortly, as well as checking the sap buckets on the trees. It only went down to 1°C last night so I doubt the sap is flowing.
Today is going to be another day of working outside. I have brush to drag to the burn pile, as well as a few more things to cut. I may need to dig out the snow shoes now that the snow is getting soft. I feels so good to be out in the sunshine again!! And I love that there are birds singing again! I really miss that all winter.
Have a great day all :)

Netty— good that you can get out and about in the SUN ! Awwwwwww, it’s coming isn’t it.
With the weather improvement, have you been able to catch another rabbit? Ach, and those pesky mice….so annoying.
It is also good that you can begin dragging stuff around outside. That must be pretty heavy work.

Have you been formulating plans for your personal gardening goals yet? Do you still work for in gardening commercially?

    Take good care.

Good Wednesday morning all. Currently -11°C and clear. It's a chilly one! Weatherman says to expect temperatures around 1°C today.
It been interesting to watch how the temperature effects the flow of sap from the sugar maples. I have never tapped these trees in the almost 22 years we've lived here, but my daughter and the grandkids usually tap theirs. This year there is too much snow and they are unable to get out to their maple bush so I invited them to tap my trees. Its been a fun experience, and they are doing the boiling down of the sap so the work is all done for me. An added bonus is extra grandkid visits :)
@Sjoerd I haven't seen any rabbits! I still had the trap set until the other night when the skunks were out at the neighbours and I decided that I really didn't want to catch one of those. I'll keep it handy until the rabbits are back, but hopefully I won't need it. Garden plans are made, and yes, I'll be back to work soon. Its almost the busy time of year!
    Have a great day all!
