Was the wood pressure treated? If so not a great idea unless you line it with plastic.
The plants are probably in shock. Keep and eye on them, give them plenty of water and they should be okay. You could actually cut them all the way...

Re: stakes I buy bamboo stakes, they are about 1.50 each at discount stores...lowes and home depot sell them as well.
Did you mean Lupin instead of Lupis? They are a perennial but is also considered an invasive species in some areas since it spreads so easily....
