I know the dates for 2 of my perrenial flowers and this can help me to learn how to post pictures too. 8) The first one is a Bowl of Beauty peony. This is the first bloom this year and there's a lot more buds on them.

The 2nd one is a "V" for Victory yellow hybrid tea rose.

I'll add more when more stuff is blooming.

Jerry, Are you looking for full bloom dates or just the first day I notice an open flower?

Lilacs are in full bloom here. I smelled them at a farmers market last week and that was Thursday May May 9th, so they would have been open for a day or two before that. We are in zone....6? used to be 5b, but they changed it, (We are latitude 41/longitude 81 degrees) but I wouldn't change it myself.

The flowers should be your own(on your property) and in the ground for at least one seasonal cycle. This acclimates the flower under study to your unique environment. It is easier to gather relevant date if you have the capability of observing plant on a daily basis. This allows you to pinpoint the day the plant first flowers for the season. Approximates will not do, however close to the flowering date, as it provides an error factor. I missed 11 flowering dates because I was on vacation. Even though I could come within 3 or 4 days. Daylilies are an excellent study subject as the flower is open only one day and spent flowers(indicating a missed first day) are obvious. If in doubt provide the observation, I will filter unusable data and provide explanations. As this is the first year it takes questions and answers to make it flow smoothly.

I should be able to glean some interesting results from the observations. I am setting up the criteria for the results as the study develops. The first and only repeat observation will take place in a few weeks. Baselines between gardens are just one result of the study but an interesting one as it 'connects' people and their gardens in a unique way. Answering the question "When did that flower last year" is one of the 'lookup' questions that member observations provide.

I thought about trees and it is difficult to use a tree as a study subject. Trees often have hundreds if not thousands of flowers. Is the day you select the instance of a flowers first day? Perhaps, perhaps not. A ground flower or bush is a lot easier to monitor. I will put a tree in more for reference than to establish a study baseline. As this is the first year the guidelines are loose. The filters for the data will be a lot stricter.

It is hoped that the easy entry criteria will attract wide participation. By default the zone is already there. As for the first day of a flower, I walk the yard noting which flowers have buds and then look for the first day one opens. The established perennial criteria is up to the member to determine as they often know when the plant was put in the ground or know that it has been in the ground for a season or more.

@ Jerry Sullivan. The blooming date on the Peony is correct and that was the first flower this year. I planted it 3 or 4 years ago.
But that's not the first yellow rose this year. I planted that too before I planted the peonies but it was already blooming in April.
Now that I get what the criteria is, I'll only post about flowers that bloom for the first time. There's lots of flowering plants here and even some that don't blossem till the middle of summer. That's when the Amaryllis Belladonna sends up it's first blooms and I'm always watching for those! :-D

Yesterday, 05-14-13, I had a Daylily blooming and didn't take the photo because I thought it had already bloomed. So... no photo, it was "Pearl Harbor".
And today there was the "regular" Orange Canna and the Mexican Petunia.
