Mart--I do not remember how I made them as the recipe and attempt was from seven years ago now. I discarded it when I failed to get the flavour that I wanted. I will look again in that pile of oldy-mouldy recipe's collected through the years. (Hiya Mart--I looked again through all the old recipe's and could not find that pickled beetroot recipe. Ach.) Sorry Ronni. It's all my fault...I misspelled "slenderling". I should have used an "e" instead of an "i". It isn't a real word though, it is sort of a Dutchification, meaning --a slender person. We use the "-ling" to indicate the nature of a person...such as vreemdeling. That means stranger. Vreemd = strange, and ling indicates a person. So I just sort of made up this word. The Dutch word for slender is slank...so the Bride referred to my family as "Slankelingen". The "en" makes a noun plural. It's all complicated innit...hence the term--"double dutch", I suppose.
