Thank you catspower... I have wondered that also. And other terms as well...lotties...what is that? Is it yard, garden or what? Inquiring minds want to know!
LOL This old fat lady would love to go overseas to learn the different cultures, but I don't ever see that happening. Been to Hawaii, Alaska(would go back there in a heartbeat), and 5 caribean cruises.
An allotment is a parcel of land similar to a community garden but each individual, for a membership fee, gardens their own alloted portion of that land for their own flowers and/or vegetables. Lottie is the nickname for allotment. Sjoerd and/or EJ can further explain since they both have allotments where they garden. Somewhere in the forums Sjoerd has posted an explanation but I can't find it.
Nothing on this land but rocks. But my dad found quite a few arrowheads on the farm where he grew up. And long ago, in the forest by my house, I found a dumpsite of sorts, tons of old pottery bits & bottles. Hey, you all who find bits like that, wouldn't it be cool to mosaic them around a flowerpot? Sort of a memorial to the garden? How fun to think of a scrawny old man, long grey beard & faded blue eyes, scratching away at his bit of earth in the lottie, puffing on his old pipe. Perhaps setting it down to mop his creviced brow, forgetting to pick it up again...
http://maps.google.nl/maps/ms?hl=nl&ie= ... bc6ea&z=15 Here is a link to a google map showing our Allotment Complexes (blue pins with black dot). My lotties are in the complex located at the lower left of the map. You can enlarge the map to see the plots fairly well to get an idea. As Toni said, an allotment is a parcel of land alloted to a person who rents it for growing flowers, veggies and fruit, or all of these. Here, the individual allotments are always a part of a group of allotments. I call the group of allotments a "complex". Some complexes are ownewd by local governments and some are privately owned. Ours is privately owned and therefore have many rules. Usually the ones leased by the county or city governments have very few rules and can sometimes be quite overgrown when you take control of it and have few if any utilities. Toni also correctly said that "lotties" are just short for Allotments. A person who rents and works a lottie is known as an "Allotmenteer". You can always have a look at my website (english version) to get a feel of what our allotment complex is like. The link is just below these words, next to my name.
Thank you so much for explaining it to me. Hubby and I live way out in the country, south central USA. Our house sits on a little over 2 acres. Also have a new mobil home near the pond. Got it for my daughter to live in while she was going to paramedic school. She graduated(top 1 in her class), got a job, and moved out. I am now fixing up the MH to be my gift shop. "OH FUDGE!! Aunt Tiques & Uncle Trinkets" is the name I have picked out. I have so many antiques that I just need to downsize. I am also known as "The Fudge Lady" around here. I make fudge year round, but at for Christmas, I make about 300 pounds or more. Cathy
""The Fufge Lady"....OMG! Just pass the tin this way, please. :-D That's a catchy name for your gift shop. I hope you do well with it.
This is interesting - ALl that stuff you guys get when digging. My dogs and I also love digging in the garden, however we do not find anything half as interesting as yours. Our finds include rocks, and clay many a time and our most intersting find to date is a rusted horseshoe.
