I knit continental style, and usually knit a lot during winter. I also crochet but haven't done much during the last couple of years. I have done a bit of embroidery too, but really haven't got the patience for it. As for sewing I still haven't found a machine that I can get along with. I guess it's not in me to sew either, due to lack of patience.

bsewnsew....I'm still trying to get down the 1/4 inch seams, I'm not all that consistent :( . I'm also finding it difficult to cut straight. One of the local quilters told me to rip the fabric to be sure it's straight, so I've been doing that now. So much to learn!!!

Look around the house at cardboard inserts.

Some time the squares in boxes an such have perfect squares or magazines. Or folders in the mail.
Measure some thing and cut that according to what you want..

Say if you get a 12 inch square, an need 10 and half one.

Just cut the extra off all the way around.

I never liked ripping the fabric because it causes the fabric to stretch along the edge. You will also be happier with the end result if you buy good quality fabric to begin with. The thread count is higher which gives it more stability making the cutting, sewing and quilting more accurate.

I had a wide assortment of Omnigrid rulers, squares, rotary cutters and two sizes of Olfa mats. That is the best way to make sure your pieces are accurate. I inherited a bag full of Dresden Plate wedges when my grandmother died, one of my aunts told me that she had drawn around the edges of a piece of cardboard and cut them out for her when she was young and always wondered why they had never been used in a quilt. I never told her but they were totally unusable because the edges of the cardboard crumpled as she used it over and over making each piece smaller than the one before it, plus for some of the pieces she held the pencil straight up and some she held it at a slant and the fabric stretched as she marked it.

As far as the 1/4 inch seams, find out if you can get a quilters foot for your machine. The right edge of the foot is 1/4 inch from the needle so you can get an exact seam.
Or place a strip of 1/4 inch wide masking tape across the bed of your machine to act as a guide.

    She is correct.
After u put tabe there for a guide, hold the material against that an keep your eye on that side for perfection..

    amen.

Thanks Toni and B for the great tips. I already have masking tape down on my machine which seems to be helping. My problem with cutting comes when I have to fold the material on the mat...it always looks straight but inevitably ends up a bit off. I know that practice makes perfect, and I'm practicing a lot lately!

Never thought I'd have the patience for sewing, but I'm loving the design process of quilting. I'm not good at following patterns (I'm more of a visual learner), and so far I'm enjoying the challenge.

I would love to see some pictures of your quilting spaces if you have them. I'm currently making do with an assortment of tables, and am looking for more storage options (for materials, thread, scraps, etc.). I just picked up a few totes this morning for my material, and would like my hubby to build me some shelving. We burn with wood here, so leaving material out in the open isn't an option (too dusty).

I don't think you ever have enough space for material or sewing. I have two tables for sewing but clean off the big island table in the kitchen for cutting. I have two shelves and some small units for material and thread. dr wanted to know what happened to the other chair from the kitchen. I pointed and he nodded. It was over by the wall stacked with material waiting to be cut. I can't iron anything without clearing off the ironing board and there isn't a chair in the sewing area that's not stacked with an odd assortment of stuff. Somehow it just overflows. dooley

Isn't it nice to change things around sometime. I change the furniture around and my poor hubby doesn't know were he will sit when he comes home sometime. I made a table cloth the other day, Things like this keep me busy, My crazy husband says a happy wife is a busy wife, Well you know what I said to that, LOL :smt021. Margie,

    Your my type completely..
I would love to see the curtains an table cloths .
I do my upstairs ones mostly. But prefer lace ? I am coo coo.
For my kitchen chairs I make back covers about 10 inches down to keep the greasy off the . The Walmart had a nice selection of floral upholstery material.
I use that to make the covers.
I bought a dining room table Tapestry for $6.00 I want to use it for a pattern to make more.
It is just a strip down the middle with a half diamond point on each side .Love it .
Hubby doesnt like tablecloths . I did make a lace one.

I've been busy making some keychains out of plastic canvas and some crochet covered coathangers. I've got a jewelry pouch all cut out, just need to sew it together.
