My tip about the march pruning is based upon the fact that it is blooming now. Between now and the Ides, we ought to try and find out the correct name of this beauty, for if it is blooming an an odd time for the sort that it is then a march pruning could do more harm than good. I will look for this plant. Do the blooms have 4 or 5 purple petals? Can you send me a good foto of one the flowers? I am making such a deal of this because there are several different purple-flowering Clematises.
Sjoerd, thank you for taking an interest! I would love to know what kind it is. The typical purple is a Jackmanii but the flowers look different. I suspect this is a 6 petal variety. it has some flowers that have 4 petals maybe because it is still a juvenile? I hope it continues to bloom as late as October. Such a great time to have color in the garden
Well, I have been looking at purple Clems for quite awhile now. I cannot tell exactly which one you have; however, I believe that it is a Viticella sort. Pruning in march then.
Dear Gail, Cayu has one of those-- but she said that she didn't think that it was a Jack, the leaves would have been larger.

Gail you might be right, it does look a bit like 'Jorma' or the one right before that 'Etoile Violette'. Both are viticellas.
CM i've just looked at them again and in my opinion i would say the Jorma mainly because of the centre also
