I am saving bean seeds for the first time. I will be using them for garden seed next year. My question is, how small is too small to replant a been seed. Seems I have quite a mixture in sizes after I have shelled them. Thanks. Christina
Chrisle, I can't be positive about small seeds. I would go ahead and plant them to see what happens. I waited for my beans to dry on the vine, which never happened, so last week, I did what I should have done two weeks ago. I pulled the bottom of the plants out, leaving them hanging on the supports. They have to dry without moisture. If the roots aren't in soil, they can't get moisture. Unless you count the great rain we're getting today.
After I hull my bean seeds, I let them dry for one more week. Then I sort through them. I pick out mishappened, small, and any off colored beans. I had about a half pint of small white Blue Lake pole beans that I will soak over night and make soup with them. This is the way I package my seeds to trade. I usually put 32 seeds in a pack to trade.
Don, you certainly are organized. The beans are something I would trade for. If my tomato seeds produce next year, maybe I will begin trading. Beautiful beans.
Thank so much GP and Don for the replies. Late getting back on as I am having modem problems. Looks like I need a new one. I am sorting the beans tossing the split ones and ones that just don't look quite right. Going to save a few of the smaller ones just to see if they will reproduce. They are just for me and I won't be selling them. My beans are Blue Lake bush, yellow wax and Cranberry bush. Don yours look so perfect and organized in the packages! Thanks again
