I remembered about an estate gamekeeper who hung dead rooks out on the fence to keep the others away, I think it worked with mine as I haven't had any more in the garden.

Yes...that's the one. What a specimen it is too.
You know Droopy, your specimen identification book and mine must be different. My copy says nothing about the bug being "semi-destructive". Further, it has nothing but glowing words of description of this exotic garden herbivore.
My personal experience with this species revealed that it tends to wander off with edibles alright...but not enough to sustain it's migration back to it's natural habitat. You see, this bee is petit and doesn't have any pouches on it's back legs or waist in which to store pollen or any other form of goodies.
This species of Bombus is so unique that I believe that it may well be the only one in existence....you know, like when Mother Nature made this one, she threw away the mold. Having said that, I couldn't help but notice that the Bombus travelled in a mini swarm which appeared to be adults and siblings.
It was a delight to observe these rare beings moving about the lotties. They examined every corner and seemed to be enjoying themselves.

It was with more than a little regret and a twinge of sadness that I bade farewell to these remarkable creatures the following day, as they left and again headed northwards. What a memorable experience this was in all respects.

I hope that the weather conditions will be favorable and they can again ride on the north-western winds, down this way again someday.

Awww, I can tell you had a good experience with this bee, Sjoerd. :D You're such a sweet person. That's probably why they were so well behaved in your garden,
