tell me about it sjoerd! i was born in Alaska in '49, 20 miles outside of Anchorage. the main street there was dirt at the time! my folks built a little log cabin there. dad made a sled for us out of one of mom's cookie sheets. we have old films of it all...my cheeks were bright red in all of them!
Was that Wasilla...or perhaps Palmer that you were born in then? Wasilla was one of the places that I lived in. The woman that I rented from in Wasill;a lived in Palmer. Such a good woman. She used to make Cherry cheese cakes for me, bless 'er. I lived in several places during the years that I lived there.
no sjoerd. it was a little town called Spenard. lots of trees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spenard,_Alaska i think Anchorage has expanded out over it now. i was told there is a mall encircling the cabin my folks built. in the 60's during the big quake there, the chimney on the cabin was the only one that survived!
Oh...on the way to Portage Glacier. Yeah?! It is south,south-east sorta, right? There was a Bird bar or something Rainbow, or Girdwood or something. Was your dad in the service then?
no. he was just out of the Navy and married mom and they went to Alaska for the adventure of it. he pumped gas while doing his bar exam (to become a lawyer), and mom was the storylady on the one radio station there. fascinating folks!
