That looks real nice, GN. The butterflies are going to l o v e it! You and your fam can pull up the lawn chairs and watch the show. Your fence is pretty too, btw. And your grass. (I used CajunBelle's suggestion yesterday too -- used wet newspapers under the mulch around my figs.)
i want these bushes to act as a semi-screen to some extent so i planted them closer than id seen recommended. They say like 5-6ft apart but i planted them 4ft apart......i hope that will be ok. I guess they will just grow into each other?
took another pic the other day on my cell of the established butterfly bush i have sitting right upside the back of my house...next to the AC unit. looks like its growing pretty good although something has been chompin on its leaves a lil. I really should of put down some of that cloth to prevent weeds as some stuff is growing through the mulch i put down. I will have to get down and clean this area up soon before it grows bigger. Havnt taken any more pics of my Black Knight group but there slowly coming a long. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden )
I havent got any pics yet, but I got a Butterfly Bush last year and mom mowed down half of it <.< But its coming back I also got another one from Michiganbulb, its so small But It looks good
not sure DaisyB but im not too worried as they grow pretty fast and the damage isnt enough to worry me. I just figure some bugs getting a lil meal.. Post up some pics TheBip when you get some..
pic, as promised And another one butterfly bush on the left, primrose lilac (yellow lilac!) on the right
A friend gave me a butterfly bush about 6 weeks ago, finally put it in the ground and it is growing good. Supposed to be the kind with 3 different colored flowers on the same plant, we shall see. GN, I noticed a cute little red doggie in one of your pictures. Could you post a better pic of it. I love dogs.
butterfly bush Hi Green numb, I saw one of your post about butterfly bushes That your sister gave you a start of one , How did you start that piece? Did she just cut it of or what? were did she cut it? I have 3 of them but I would like to have some starts of mine. Thank you Margie
Those will look beautiful against the fence and you'll really see the butterflies. I have a large silver leaf variety with white blooms that is covered with Swallowtails and others every summer. Look forward to those photos.
Cajonbelle, I saw that variety of butterfly bush with the 3 colors of blooms in a catalog -- ooh, lucky you! I have a nice spot for a BFbush, but I need to get one of the littler ones... That tricolor one is really pretty and summery! Like ice cream sprinkles!
cool a pic, thanks for adding to the thread Bip! cajunbelle, those tri-coloured butterfly bushes look cool, i might order one next year... ive heard though that one colour will dominate like on those multi-fruit trees you can get. Still, i think its worth the purchase just to see what happens.. Margie ive never tried cuttings on my own, she had already rooted it and it basically was a small stick in a pot. If you google butterfly bush cuttings you can find some good guides on how to do it and when. I would tell ya but i have no experience in it. My Black knights are doing pretty good, i added 2 more to the line so i now have 9 bushes going along the fence. I planted my 1 White profusion bush across the yard as a single specimen which will stand on its own. hope to get out in the yard and take some pics of the progress... oh and my already established butterfly bush is doing awesome! its really getting big and bushy!
back with a few pics of the butterfly bushes... this is my established one....just starting to bloom.. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) here is the line of black knights... they are a lil spindly and leggy but i expected that this first year. Once i cut them back next year they should come back more compact and bushy. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) the first bloom is coming out. I really dig the dark purple color. Its definitely a darker shade than my established purple one. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) i need to buy some more mulch, i didnt have enough when i planted them but it shouldnt take much to get this covered up. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) heres the white profusion i planted as a single specimen... its starting to flower now but this pic doesnt capture that.. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) better flowering pics soon..
ok i took a few shots of the blooms that have started coming out... heres the light purple BB (butterfly bush) that is really starting to take shape this year. The blooms have just started to come out and turn colour.. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) heres a few shots of a some of the developing flowers.. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) here is a flower on the white profusion that is starting to develop some color.. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) and lastly a few shots of the darker purple black knight flowers... take a look, see the lil guy on the flower... looks moth like doesnt he, any one know what he is? ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden ) oh im also gonna be spreading the BB love by giving my wife the 2 surviving no name varieties i bought from the discount store. They are doing quite wll from the sticks they started as and she is gonna give them to her friend at work to plant. Ones white and ones purple. ( photo / image / picture from Green_Numb's Garden )
Hey GN! Wow, they are looking great and really happy! How did you start the two in the pots? (Did you see, I got some torch lillies??!!)
