Part Two— Hahaha, you are still here, just checking. The tool is used for lifting tulip bulbs which grow on hills like potatoes and the name translated would be “tulip lifting spade”. While lifting the bulbs the workers sit on their knees in the rows, hack into the hill with the blade and flips it to expose the bulbs. The spade is specific to the region of Westfriesland and only manufactured by Sneeboer who made right handed and a left handed models. The person from the museum showed a keen interest to add the ‘tulpenrodersschop’ to the museum collection so we have to see if the owner would be willing to part with it. So, that’s it. Everybody who helped with suggestions and showing interest, thank you.
Sjoerd Ok it’s a small world…a museum in your village… WOW .. and probably why the gals were using it in your area … now I have to ask ..What’s a Tulpenrodersschop… ? I used a translation for tul………and the word tulip popped up. It must chop tulip patches to separate for division… Is there a prize attached to the cliffhanger story ? How about a dozen tulips .
Hi Pac— Tulpenrodersschop literally means, tulip-lifter’s-spade. See the Part Two posting at the top of this page. There is also a short explanation. The prize...a dozen tulips?? How’s about a field full—
No.. I don’t think I was on the site yet. It’s a beautiful pic of the tulip fields from where? Your cam shots are always inspiring. Hence the tool for tulip digging .its almost tulip time…
Lucky that I chose the yellow ones then. Here is the old thread: https://www.gardenstew.com/threads/bulb-fields-in-the-netherlands.42762/#post-395393 it was such bad weather that day, but the tulpies were pretty nice anyway.
Amazing… rainbow of colors …Tulips… thanks for posting the pictures of tulips in the thread from your tulip tour. I really liked your tulip pics of acres and acres of different colored tulips. I luv tulips and so do the voles and mice… they never last longer than a year or two. Bummer.
We have the same probs with the pests. So…many gardeners here grow their tulips in containers and place those in the gardens. Once the foliage is brown and dead, they take the bulbs out of the containers , dry them and put them away until the fall.
