Mart, I must say that children are born curious. A drive to learn is simply curiosity gently directed by a teacher/parent/adult. Coming into a world where everything is different and seeking an explanation is what children do. The best teachers and parents help the child find out how to unravel the mysteries. Teaching facts is one thing--teaching how to think is another. We need to help children learn to think.
Have you talked to any recently ? There is little curiosity anymore ! I have heard some really dumb remarks by college students ! When i was growing up most of my time was spent in the school library ! Kids today do not even know where it is much less what to do when they get there ! What you will hear is,, "its boring" ! take away the cell phone and computer and most are clueless !
Tonight as we were working in the garden a friend of mine stopped to say hi. She just happens to be a school teacher. one of the things she remarked is,... the student performed pretty much the same for "home schooling" as said student did in person. achievers achieved as usual. unmotivated were still unmotivated, gamers were still playing games til 4 am and couldn't be bothered to be awake for school... perpetually late assignments were still perpetually late...
If anyone really wants to know just how far gone are the Mellinials of today - Don't bother judging them by looking in schools, collages, or universities. Just visit your local road safety and driving test facility center... You'll instantly get your answers the moment you see the poor instructor/examiner pulling their own hair out in frustration! No wonder autonomous driving vehicles is now a thing...
