I will try to avoid it. They would be an amazing quantity of work to hard prune.

This branch shows what a hard prune will result in as far as growth is concerned. I would not expect the large trunks to redevelop and I value them. Becky has other flowers to look at.

 

That pruning technique is very similar to the way my Stella magnolias come back when hard pruned.
