    Droopy, I never use gloves.
And only I know what my hands are going through!
But somehow I still manage to make them look presentable for the city folks and my job :)

    Oh goody! :D

Carolyn, I love your hands. :stew2: My personal opinion is that a gardener's hands should look like they've been gardening, but I find that most people don't agree with me.

When I need really clean hands I clean a harness. Saddle soap is super for hand cleaning. :D

I am a dirt magnet! I can't even step out the door and my hands are dirty. My hands look a lot like Carolyn's ... no amount of scrubbing will get the dirt out. Just this week I have started getting cracked hands and they really STING. I need to find a good hand creme. Droopy - Saddlesoap? Maybe I'll head next door to the barn and offer to clean their tack ;)

Oh...My feet, too! Cheryl. Last night I took a shower then a bath to soak my feet and scrub them with castile soap. My hands do look a little better after that. Those darn crocs get wet inside  while I am watering and then there is a slurry of mud inside, too. Makes for difficult traction control :D while going through the garden pulling a hose or carrying anything heavy. I found a can of Boraxo powdered hand soap at a garage sale the other day  for 50 cents so I snagged it and tried it. It does work wonderfully, but still doesn't get these hands clean.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I always start off wearing gloves, but somehow I always wind up taking them off and getting in the dirt. I wear crocs when I garden and my feet get filthy!

I know when the dirt has finally worn off my hands and feet, it's time to do something in the garden again!

Oh boy, such recognition! Thanks for starting this post, Droopy, because now I no longer feel silly when my hands get dirty in the garden despite having promised myself not to & to wear gloves!
Maybe we should all be proud of the remains of soil under our nails, because it obviously is a keen gardener's trademark.
I guess we are all very much in touch with our gardens, literally :stew1:

Netty, now don't laugh, but Udder Balm is a wonderful skin therapy/conditioner. It is intended for cows (as you probably guessed) but it has the consistency of vaseline, and when rubbed into sore, cracked, scraped skin, makes the skin feel slightly warm and then soothed. It promotes healing. There is also Udder Cream which comes in a tube and it works great, too. I get Udder Balm at the feed store, and the Cream at the hardware store.
Of course, after protracted use, the user has a tendency to moo . . . .

I wear gloves but since I have worn holes in the finger tips of most of them, it's almost like not wearing gloves at all.

Another brand of Udder Balm is called Bag Balm and can be found at fabric stores. Quilters have been using it for years, working with fabric your skin dries out and starts cracking if you are at it all day.

Hi, just thought I would let everyone feel better by telling them it is the same all over the world, certainly the same at my place too, but feet as well.Has anyone walked in newly dug soil and felt not only the mud between the toes but the warmth of the soil?
    Should be compulsory I reckon!

Thanks for the tips about Udder Balm. I now remember a gardener that I used to work with used that on her hands. This is the first year that my hands are cracking and getting almost scaly and when I go to bed at night, they actually hurt. I think I'll try it.

I hate gloves I have to feel the dirt and any pain from thorns go away when I see the outcome from my pain and labor lol if nobody likes my hands they don't have to look and I bet my flowers look better than theirs lol

I cut my nails off and (rake) bar soap under them. I do use gloves that are skin tight. When cutting down this with that have Cut me in past. But can do pull Weeds with them. And can not plant seeds or plants with them. Or dead-head flowers.

Gloves? What are gloves? You should see my hands after gardening especially after rain!
