Has anyone had any luck growing roses in large containers? I'm sure they would fair better in the ground, but we have very invasive grass in the area I want to put them. I just can not see weeding and digging around all those thorns. My plan was to put a weed barrier down ( I know, that does not work very well ), then maybe 5 inches of rock. I'll get my large ceramic pots, plant my roses ( 3 bush and 2 tree type) and space out onto the rock area. It's a East facing spot, so it gets full sun until about 2PM. Thoughts? Thank you so much in advance.
I've never tried container roses, but I don't see why the smaller bush varieties couldn't do well in a large container. Tree roses, I would have my doubts as to their happiness in a container. One thing I would definitely do, is put the containers on bricks or pavers to raise them from the rocks. I have to be vigilant here in Texas for invasive soil insects (fire ants, especially) and raising the bottom of the container from soil/mulch contact helps a lot.
