I've had very few 90% germination rates with flower seeds. 75% is a great rate in my opinion, maybe others have had better success. Most vegetable seeds have a better germination rate, for me anyway.
germination Wow You do quite well with your germination rate. whats the secret to your success? You make a good farmer. ;o) barb
Good luck on your seeds Cajunbelle. On the 10th I planted 10 cucumbers and 15 Big boy tomatoes from Burpees. The cucumbers sprouted on the 13th (all came up yesterday) I felt like I gave birth . This is a first for me in the veg. seeds. I also got a sunflower that came up today. Seeds don't take as long as the package says. Maybe its because I use a special ingredient
90% germination Tell mom welcome to the club.......90 % is hard to get.........i sure dont.. There are so many factors to cause the germination. Weather , soil ,humidity, dampoff, insects......... Mother nature is most of our problem. Not sure how any place guarentees that rate????? LMK if you find out. barb
Barb, believe me, 75% is not really common with my flower seeds. I like to use peat pellets, I find that the seedlings are stronger and down dampen off as bad. For seeds with hard coats I soak them for 24 hours and then put them between really damp paper towels, put them in a sealed baggie on top of the fridge. Some hard seeds, like moonflower vine or corkscrew vine need to be nicked before soaking. Check them everyday, when the little root shows pot them up in a seed starting mix, or put them in peat pellets. For really hardy seeds, or large seeds, like zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, etc, I just sow them in a flat of seed starting mix. I do the same with really small seeds, like impatiens, moss rose, torinea, but don't cover them, just kinda tap the soil down. Veggie seeds just seem to do better, I like the peat pellets for my tomatoe and pepper seeds, but beans, cucumbers, peas and okra, I just direct sow as soon as the soil warms. Okra does need to be soaked overnight. Hope this helps. OK, Giz, fess up, what's the secret ingredient.
To each his own........ I try to save on supplys..($) I start so darn may seeds it would cost me big time to buy pellets.... I use soil mix and a heating cable, some are in plastic bags....... Some dont work at all........Nick or not.. I am hunting Torina seeds if anyone has some. barb
