That cake sounds delicious! Please eat a piece for me will you? I really like the flag idea. Hope it was a grand day Deanna :-D
Thank you all!! Yesterday was a very good birthday. We had a relaxing time. My surprise was a dinner made and ate on our back beach. Complete with table, candles and cake,,lol. We had dinner under the midnight sun. Because there was alcohol involved they didn't want to use the cars to drive anywhere,, that was fine by me!! I had a traditional norwegian creme cake for my birthday, strawberry. but my sister-in-law made an apple pie for me, that was my totally american surprise,,,ohhh it was so good too. First time she ever made one! The flag is raised for everyone, when they have a birthday, they've done that for me in the past, but i had no idea what it meant. They just assumed i knew. My father-in-law got me from down on the field to show me, and thats when i asked him why,, and was told. Now today i'm up and getting ready to go to the Viking museum, Sigrund has never been there, and Kolbjørn is taking us on a horse and wagon ride. Then to Leknes to go spend some of my birthday money on flowers!!! (See I know my priorities,,lol)
Sounds like you had a lovely day, well deserved! Enjoy your shopping spree. I've never really thought about the custom of raising the flag on birthdays, because that's the way it's always been. I guess I just assumed that everybody did it all over the world. Now I know better.
That custom is not normal here. The only thing that we raise the flag for outside the national times is is a child successfully graduates at school ...and their schoolbook case is tied to the end of the flag mast as well. ---oh yes, and I have also seen it with newborn babies here and there. Raising the flag is a good custom, I feel.
It sounds like you had a wonderful day...sorry I missed it but happy belated birthday to you...Sherry
