Yep, they do look a little rough. Nothing ventured Nothing gained. I am glad to see you tried a new plant even if it didn't turn out as you had hoped. You never get anything if you don't try anything. How much loose soil do they have to grow in. If the soil is compacted or rocky they tend to get misshapen. the fiberous hairy roots look as if there may have been manure in the soil also. Carrots don't "like" to be fertilized. As hot as it is, they could be bitter. Do you have a cooler season where you are. In case they are bitter, try them again in a cooler season if you have one. You did good KK.
Hi Sojerd, they are rough!! Becky stir fried them for lunch today with tumeric and I didn't even know there were carrots in them. Well guess there is no flavour then!! Oops .... I was just informed that only 2 pieces were used .... will let you know when the rest are consumed. Definitely I'll be on the look out for other species. Thanks Carolyn, the soil were loosen before I planted and it is kind of a clayish soil. I have added some sand to it but some of it still clumps up. This is what I felt when I was digging them up. As for manure, I only use compost and I did add some while they were growing. Your deductions are very accurate Carolyn, thanks. I really do wish to have a cooler season here but nature would not permit!
Hi KK, add lots, and I do mean lots, more sand to the mix if you can. which also means you will need to mulch and water more than you did for this crop if you are going to try them again. You might want to try a smaller carrot, too. that might help some if they don't have as far to grow into the soil or as long to mature. That's if you can find them there or order them through a seed place and have them mailed to you. Good luck on the next crop.
Sojerd, the rest of the carrots were consumed last weekend and all I can say that it is pretty blend with a very weak carrot flavour....ah well.....
