Have you ever gotten mad at someone who talks to you like you are an idiot?

Wow, it seems like everyone's had a run-in with 'officious' people! Toni, I had a person ask me what I did and I replied the same as you. This 'lady' looked shocked and said she would be bored to death. All I said was 'Not if you did it right'.

Once, when I was editor of a local paper, a "local" politician asked me what I did. I told him "more than you do." It took him a good few minutes to figure out he had been insulted.

I had an annoying interaction with a felloW bike rider on our vacation. I am not exactly proud of my response, but he got my goat.We were all sitting at dining tables together & the man next to me began asking me about my experience on the ride (we'd done maybe 55 miles that day & I was tired). He proceeded to try to advise me (unsolicited) about the 101 things I must be doing wrong...All with coments about hoW women make poor bike riders! I was defending myself ( & womenkind) when my husband spoke up for me (good man). That seemed to energize me & I told the guy I was feeling insulted by his comments. He said his wife didn't mind his comments, whereupon I responded "yeah well you & I would be divorced in 2 minutes!" I have never before threatened a perfect stranger with divorce (or anyone for that matter) & I could tell it really bothered him. I am not exactly proud of myself but boy oh boy was he annoying.

I felt sorry for both of them. I thin they have one of these very prickly relationships. The next day, he sought us out in order to introduce his wife to us...it was awkward to say the least. I could tell he still felt unresolved about it, but I don't think he had any idea of how insulting he had been. That is the part that is sad. Not one of my finer moments, but in the heat of the moment sometimes one says things that are less than skillful.

Gee Cayuga, I think your reply was spot on! When someone is insulting, all the rules are suspended and the gloves are off. You were pretty restrained.
I'd contribute some folding money to that wife's hit man fund!

@Cayuga Morning - to me it sounds like the man has (ahem) "issues" that go beyond him and the (ahem) "little woman." Very odd topic to bring up to somebody particularly with an insulting edge to it - OR - the guy is just normally boorish with no insight how his ramblings and rumblings can be offensive. I think your answer was spot on. Not sure "I" would have been that restrained :)

Some years ago when parking my car in the street outside my house i bumped into the car in front,..not hard mind you,.. but enough for a guy walking along the path to start tapping on my window to announce that he was going to report me to the police,..feel free to do that i said,..first tell the owner seeing he lives at No 7,..its there i pointed,..he rang the doorbell and my lady friend answered,..i couldn't hear what conversation went down but he was pointing at the car and me,..my lady friend put her hand to her mouth and started laughing,..the guy almost tripped as he walked back towards me and couldn't look at me,..my lady friend had told him that the car i was driving was mine so was the one i bumped into,..i was told i was very cruel to put the guy in such a spot,..maybe i was,..but i loved it

@Philip - Sometimes a reality check is just the ticket. I'm kinda thinking the guy you described was a bit to (ahem) "thick" to get your point ;) BUT good on you for at least 'making him aware' via unsolicited feedback. ;) :) :)

I wish had the finesse for good comebacks. Only once it a great while can I think of one at the moment needed, however I can think of several that I could have used an hour later! :smt013
