The deer let my crocus come out and have buds then ate everything including the foliage in one night. They were going to be pretty. What they didn't eat they stomped to death :'(
I've watched squirrels bury seeds or nuts with bluejays watching, then the bluejays come down and steal the seeds or nuts. Jerry
Usually, the bulbs I plant, come up in spring. I just have a few missing ones. Like one huge oriental lily, that just didn't come up last spring. Could be, that DAD uprooted a plum tree that the bulb was planted near. SO... that could be a reason. It was a really nice one, had had it for years... GONE! And I had about 3 fritillaria bulbs... last spring I had all 3, this spring NONE. I would blame it on the fact that there was too much water in the soil. I think they don't like it that wet. other than that... all tulips, lilies, daffodils, etc. ALL OK!
I'm beginning to think that something has snatched my new Day Lily bulbs. It's been just a bit over a month since I planted them, and not one of them has popped their little heads out of the soil. But I'll patiently wait... since this is the first time I've planted them, I'd hate to go digging around and screw them up.
I am Mad At The Moles The moles took mine I planted this spring, I planted 15 glads and they ate 9 of them they took them right out of the hole, I seen the big hills they make go straight to the bulbs under the ground, I am so mad, I am ready to let them have it, Margie
I didn't lose any bulbs from my own garden,..but my cats,..yes cats and kittens!,. brought bulbs into the house last year,..came in through the bathroom window with bulb in mouth then proceeded to chew and play with them,..two of the kittens died as a result,..the Vet claimed it was either the species of bulb,..or a chemical coating,..here are just some of the bulbs i found the felines with. Beating the squirrels keeping the beauty I got a tip about planting bulbs just the other day..we have tons of squirrels too. if you actually make the chicken wire into a little basket and plant your bulbs that way, cover them with soil, and they bloom up right through the chicken wire...so this way the chicken wire goes unseen and wont disturb the beauty of the gardens you've worked so hard in. Another way is to remove the yummy smelling scent of the bulbs, I heard cat litter over top will help, and cayenne pepper, because they hate the smell, blood meal works as well...
Saw no evidence of digging or anything else but my Leucojum (sp?) and snow drops disappeared two years. Probably will not replant either again. Maybe I planted them too deep???
Voles do a great job of eating them trough the winter. they will eat anything it seems. I don't think moles eat them, they are insectivores.
Those look like daffodil bulbs and they are highly poisonous. I have chickens dig them up, but never eat them.
I have had lots of bulbs disappear: tulips, gladiolias, oriental lilies, crocus, and probably some others that do not come to mind at the moment. I have tried planting them in pots, but some animal/s knocks the pots over and steals my bulbs. I think the moles eat my tulips. They never reappear elsewhere for me. I have thought of trying cayenne pepper on them, but haven't done it yet.
