Hello nitram, i've not been on the forum with my health again it's so depressing but i hope all is well your end :)

I had some ericacerous compost left from some young Pieris going in the garden besides young Acers early this year and that was added with some normal compost to fill it to the top as i hadn't got enough but i've also added plant food.
We've got no cover here, the back and front garden is totally open to wind but it's going to be moved on the decking :)

Yours always look lovely besides those gorgeous pots

What a gorgeous garden your friend has Gail especially as it has a Japanese theme!! The large red acer looks just exactly like one that I have in the back garden here. It's my favourite one. I love the wisteria and azalias. A garden to be proud of that's for sure.

Acers drop leaves for the winter and I never cover mine.

In the UK a heathy acer should still be "hanging on" to it's leaves at the moment. These are ours today. They're looking a bit tatty, but I'll give them a trim once the leaves have fallen.

In my opinion they don't like to be in pots. It's so easy for them to dry out in hot weather.

If I'm at home on hot summer days, I give them a "mist" spray with the hose around 2.00pm.

This is our "baby" new to us this year. An Acer Palmatum Taylor. I'll keep it in this pot for now and it'll go into the shed for the winter. It'll probably stay in the pot for a year or so before I find a place for it in the garden. (something might have to be "relegated" to make room for it). This will get a bit of a trim as some branches are far too long.

Our acers had the benefit of "free fertilizer" for decades. Every week when I purged the koi pool pump sump, the dregs at the bottom of the sump that the drain pump couldn't remove, I pumped out with a wet and dry vac. Fish poo is acidic and makes an ideal fertilizer for plants that like an acid soil. I diluted it with tap water. I've lost that facility now, but I'll use some water from our little frog pond instead

@eileen i think my Acer got caught by the winds, been reading up on them more and where i put it, where the chimney is it gets cold as you can see now on the decking with a long fleece cover but i also checked my small ones and they love it, still going as fresh as a daisy :fingerscrossed: and took the main fleece cover off the camellia and the buds are forming lovely, so got 5 things right :snicker:
Our soil is contains acid so that's why my small ones are doing so well, your long one looks healthy :like:
