Oops! I forgot to bring mine in from the deck. It was down to 28 degs. the night before last night. I'll have to check it in the morning and see if it's still viable and if it is not dead I'll bring it inside. Thanks for the reminder. dooley
dooley, The top part may die but what is in ground may survive. Keep it around until well into Summer next year. You may get some very strong shoots then.
WooHoo! I just checked my Christmas cactus and it has buds, teeny tiny buds, but they are flower buds! It may actually bloom around Christmas time--so thank you GardenStew elves for the tips on growing and getting a holiday cactus to bloom!
Dooley, how's your plant? Marlin, blooming at Christmas? What?!! LOL! Any open blooms to share yet? The 1st bud to bloom at my house this year is from one of last years' clearance plants. I already had this one, but for $1, I got 9 of them without being able to tell what colors they might be (so a $10 bill would be the limit, after sales tax.) Even if all are duplicates of ones I already had, that's fine, the more the merrier! There's some in every room that has a good window. Mysteries will soon be solved...! Mine are about finished blooming. I was just thinking the plants were looking old and pretty coarse for such a short time of blooms. There are a few more buds developing. Probably should take cuttings and start them anew. Jerry, yours is quite a beauty. This fall I separated, and gave my red and white their own pots. The white one is a bit more vigorous than the red and blooms a little earlier. Does anyone get theirs to have continuous blooms through the winter? I once knew someone with a plant that bloomed most of the winter, but never asked the secret. It was a huge old plant like yours Jerry. It was kept in a bright window in an unheated upstairs. I think my red one MIGHT bloom within the next few days. The buds on the white one are still kinda small. Patiently waiting...
I have a bloom! My first Christmas (or Thanksgiving) one ever! ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) And more on the way. ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) The white one is full of buds, but probably won't open for a couple of weeks yet.
Well, I decided to mosey on over to The Stew to ask about my Christmas cactus, and BAM! Already a nice long thread going on. I got mine last Christmas, already in bloom with plenty of buds. And currently it looks healthy, it's thriving, has put out some new shoots, seems just fine. But nary a bloom. Couple of close ups of the leaves...I'm not missing anything, right? There's just nothing there. No little nubs, just a big fat nuthin'! I don't imagine there's anything I can do to encourage it to bloom at this late date. But can you suggest anything that might give me a better chance for next year?
Maybe it just needs to age a little? Mine are a few years old and this is the first year they have blooms. I did nothing different from previous years.
Ronni, it's not too late at all. There's still a few weeks until the shortest day of the year. If you have your plant in a room where there are bright lights on after dark, that may be what is preventing the buds from forming. Nights longer than days is what causes the buds: http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/p ... c1554.html http://www.ag.auburn.edu/hort/landscape/Hcactus.htm The white plant at the other end of this planter has started blooming: Mixed succulent planter ( photo / image / picture from purpleinopp's Garden ) Schlumbergera truncata, Thanksgiving cactus ( photo / image / picture from purpleinopp's Garden ) I put this planter together about a year ago. Fun to see the effort finally paying off!
that's a gorgeous white flower! Can't wait until mine open. I was visiting one of my aunts yesterday and bragged how I was finally getting blossoms. She has 6 or 7 that were in full bloom... and a yellow one too! So much for bragging rights.
More plants are showing their first blooms... Some of the best plant porn that can happen with house plants!
