Household tips for easier living

You can use many different items for households such as curtains, blinds, rugs, and carpets.

 

I have found that the anti-bacterial hand soap DW has near the kitchen sink does a good job on the glass top stove. It must have just the least amount of silicone or something for the skin but it cleans and then polishes easily compared to dish soap or other cleaners I have used.

I had a look and this one has a little glycerin and castor oil, no silicones.

 

You can use rugs, carpets, or blinds for improving the look of the home

 

Yes @MayaGmail we are presently camping & we put a mat just inside the tent for a landing place. We take our hiking boots off there so that we don't track pine needles etc onto our sleeping bags.

 

We always rinse crockery before putting it in the dishwasher. Remember, any detritus trapped in the filter is still there during the rinse cycle.

We've a lot of kitchen gadgets.
Including a few indulgences, a Kitchenaid four slot toaster we've had for eight years and a Sage "Barista touch" all singin' n' dancin' coffee machine, we bought this year.





But the most useful is our Shark mini vacuum cleaner. Great for "crumbing down" surfaces.

We bought a Rumba vacuum several years ago. I am not much into gadgets, but I love this thing. We call it R2D2 and it does a good job. We do have to R2D2-proof the house first however or else it will get itself into trouble. I came home one day to find it dragging one of my husband's hiking boots by the laces around the house. (My husband wears a size 13 very heavy boot so it was pretty comical.)

Re gadgets, my best camping gadget is a small dust pan & brush for the tent.

I don't know, maybe this isn't direct advice that no one knows, but I always keep a refueled generator ready, since we often have a power outage and a small Champion is very useful.

 

Not exactly for household use, but I love my hiking poles & spikes for winter hiking. Also my headlamp, "just in case".

 

When we loose power I keep firewood and wood scraps/shredded papers from the shredder handy in winter to lite up a fire quickly in the wood stove . I hang a shower curtain up in the kitchen doorway to contain the heat and keep the heat contained in three rooms …rather than burning tons of wood to warm the whole house. We have a ranch bowling alley home one floor. Very long and vaulted ceiling in the other rooms. The shower curtain keeps the heat contained in the area where we need, since there is no door to close to help conserve heat. Also pull out mattress in sofa in the warm room with the heat until power is restored. The longest we have been without power was 24 days. The generator runs the frig and microwave and water pumps.

 

Pac, you don't have to worry about freezing pipes?

 

oh yes we have some really cold winters…I wrap pipe tape around pipes. And all the pipes under the house are wrapped with insulation. It has been a tricky winter this season.. many over the top storms..
