    Busted, welcome to GardenStew!
I strongly recommend putting your mint in a container. I've grown different mints in containers that were 1' diameter to 3' diameter, and every time the mint filled the pot and started to hang over the edge (and yes, it will root in as soon as it touches ground and off it goes!).
Try your mint in a container, and then if you feel brave, put some in the ground. Mint spreads both by stems rooting in, and by root. Once it gets established it's very hard to get all of it out.

I believe I will stick to a container then, thank you for the tips.

The mint family planted around the house is a great insect repellent....just a thought for anyone who has animals in or around the house.

Good God you are a brave soul. I know a fellow Master Gardener who took him 10 years to get rid of some mint he planted in the ground. Hopefully you really like mint :)

Who? ME? I really like mint, no one else cares what is in my lawn, not the chickens, not the dog, not the cats, not the bees, not the neighbors and I rarely have company... not my children...good grief, they wouldn't mow the lawn if they were lost in it, I think. so mint or no mint....I'll take the mint in my lawn. I have a nice patch of penny royal spreading now. Brave? no, I love the smell while mowing.

Can't argue with that! As long as you're happy right? I personally love mint! in my pot that is :) I suppose if I had more land I'd go wild with mint because it is definitely one of my favorites..

Well there you go... I just happen to be blessed with a large back yard. So I could plant lots and lots of mint if I was inclined to and no one would be the wiser for it. :D No one would ever know. I could probably be planting all kinds of things that would be invasive, but I will refrain. Otherwise I would have to get a goat. The worst though by far is greenbrier! You do not ever want to have that in your shrubs or trees....We have a patch of woods behind the house and I found this vine thing growing back there and it is covered with these needle like thorns....     UGLY. i will take mint any day.

I love spearmint for tea and occasionally a little in a salad. I don't want to loose all of my spearmint.

But, it's a battle keeping it under control. It's crept into four of my planter boxes. I'm not looking forward to dumping out those boxes and starting over but there's no choice at this point.

Now I truly understand what is meant by "invasive." I should have put this stuff where I don't have drip lines.

The only thing I've dealt with that's worse is Bermuda grass. People who plant that ought to be hung.

We have a few varieties of mint planted in our garden, and yes they do run. I don't mind too much and actually wouldnt mind if some of it crept into the lawn. The yard would smell awesome after mowing!
