Once during a cyclone warning, over 15 years ago, my area was evacuated. But I stayed, (as I knew I could easily handle it) - I also stayed because A, I wanted to protect my plants. And B, last time authorities gave a cyclone evacuation warning here. Many people left for a few days, (to stay with relatives). Which to burglars was a dream come true. So that's why I stayed.

But while I was alone, I accidentally slipped from a ladder and broke my elbow. And with no one else around, I had no choice but to set my elbow myself...

I told the whole story here, (see link below), about 10 years ago.

You made me realize I have not laid eyes upon a medical reference book in years. We live easy here, and sloppiness is a result. A first aid book may be all we have in a time of need.

I recently bought these 2 books from a mega book sale. Haven't opened then yet. But the Army survival guide one has a huge chapter devoted to first aid, from treating snakes bites, malaria, to horrible accidents, including bullet extraction, fixing broken bones too, as well as carrying out emergency surgery.

Other books I have are e-books, some I have printed out, others I plan to - Which includes this one (see link below), Ditch Medicine. I suggest you buy this, as it's got exactly everything we are talking about!

Well, if there is anything which I've learned throughout my misspent youth - Is that 1, Murphy's law is 100% real, (anything which can potentially go wrong, will go wrong). And 2, the moment you are prepared for something, anything, then it will never happen. But the moment you become sloppy, careless, and neglectful - That's when you'll end up paying very heavily.

When my father was studying engineering in UK, his Scottish teacher told him something about British weather. He said, always take an umbrella with you. Don't leave it at home even if you see that the sky is bright and sunny. Because the day you leave it behind, is the day you'll get drenched...

So that's the sort of philosophy I also go by. Because I too solidly believe that this is exactly how the universe operates.

If anyone wants to look at it from a religious point of view - Then here as well, I'll say that this is how the Devil operates... But if you are prepared, and ready for just about everything nature can throw at you - Then the Devil too will move away from you very quickly, and find an easier target elsewhere, (as his time, resources, and energy is limited, while the Almighty's abilities are without any limits, so the Devil always needs to keep an eye his fuel tank needle on the dashboard, while those who follow the right path don't).

So that's basically why I never leave anything to chance. And do my best not to depend on everyone else except for myself. At the very least, bad vibes of the universe stay away from me. And just for fun, it is so delightful imagining the Devil pulling his hair out in frustration, whenever buzzing around me...

So we have a bunch of trees, and one hardwood had died maybe a third of the way down. So I cut it down. I am going to upend and stack the wood to terrace the slope and not move the wood any more than necessary. Not really hugelkulture but close.

I've got an almost 100 year old book which you might find useful! I plan to scan it soon, so that it can be digitally saved forever. If you're interested, PM me and we can exchange contact details. Since the book is almost 100 years old, it's copyright has long expired. Therefore no harm in copying and distributing it for free today.

Cool stuff! I cannot say I would build one though I have lived in some. It is interesting when the logs are massive. I would like to be party to saving and sharing that book though. They are interesting, and I own most of the tools.
