O.K. it's official.....we now know it spreads....I found one in my yard today while extracting dandelions. Designated 050911-2, I will plant it in a pot. There may be a couple more between here and Ohio.

That looks verrrrry similar. Mine looks like it has a little more serration to the leaves, but it could very well be the same. I did save the one by the delphinium just to see what it does. thanks for noticing whatever it is and posting a pic and reply, Carolyn

    Maybe it's Lobelia siphilitica?

This is looking better all the time, Lobelia siphilitica is a good tentative name for now, thank you Netty. As you can see the flower is partially opened, it would be nice to see a whole flower. My plant too is 18 inches tall. the range is Maine to the Dakotas and south to Missouri. A plant we will not forget soon.

What about Indian Tobacco? Lobelia Inflata, it's in the same family, but fits the description much more closely, Netty. thanks for the input. Without the flower I'm just not sure we could have found a name. The lobelia in my plant book has much more elliptical leaves than my plant, but the flower description is very much the same. I had someone look at the plant quite a while ago and she suggested lobelia, but she was not sure at all. She also said wait to see if it flowers.

I do not recall anything similar to this in any of my flower beds last year and this year it is all over. the plant is not really a nuisance, but neither is it a specimen plant, filler or of any particular interest. It's just there. Now I will pull it. Unless you have a better suggestion.

Thanks Jerry. I appreciate you having the luck to have one also.
